Low graphics mode closer in Unity 7

Canonical has informed through a statement that it will soon be possible to enable in the environment Unity 7 a new graphics mode for low-performance cards. This, of course, affects the Ubuntu Linux distribution.

Since last September, the company has been working on improving this option that will make the support of the Unity desktop get better on devices with more limited resources.

Canonical is not only thinking about physical computers that have old hardware, but also also in virtual environment where generally emulated graphics devices are not very powerful. With the reduction in the number of animations and stationery such as shadows and gradients, performance is expected to improve on all of these devices.

Other configurations that will also benefit are those that use remote connections via VNC (Virtual Network Computing) or RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol). Although in them it was already possible to configure a connection with a low consumption of resources, both the systems Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) as Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) will further improve their performance thanks to this new feature.

This new function will be implemented soon in Unity 7 through the Unity Control Center, as the video of the beginning of the news shows you. You just have to access the Appearance panel.

Those users who are not able to select the low graphics profile will be able to still use the old lowgfx mode, although it provides a worse result regarding performance. To do this, they must access CCSM> Unityshell and select low gfx.

Canonical will provide further details on this resource-efficient mode in the near future as the project progresses.
