KDE Information Center will show firmware security, among other news starting March

Firmware security information in KDE Plasma 5.24

nate graham has said that this week there has been less movement than usual in KDE. The reason may have to do with a word that I don't want to reproduce. A word that makes people around the world worry and the inhabitants of two specific countries are focusing more on being well than on any other project. Totally understandable. But the world does not stop, and although it seems to slow down, everything keeps turning.

As always, KDE has told us about many novelties that prepare for a medium-term future, but the first new thing that they tell us is striking: the list of 15-minute bugs has not been reduced, but has increased; have not fixed any bug and have found another, so now there are 81 mistakes in 15 minutes acquaintances (up from 80).

New Features Coming to KDE

  • Skanpage now allows you to configure which scanner settings are visible in its scanner options sidebar, in case some rare or non-default scanner option is regularly used (Alexander Stippich, Skanpage 22.04).
  • KRunner and other searches powered by KRunner can now convert teaspoons and tablespoons to each other and to other units (Corbin Schwimmbeck, Frameworks 5.92).
  • The Information Center now has a new "Firmware Security" page that provides information about the security of low-level components of the system (Harald Sitter, Plasma 5.25).

Bug fixes and performance improvements

  • In the Plasma Wayland session:
    • Yakuake's "swipe up/swipe down" animation now works (Tiernan Hubble, Yakuake 22.04).
    • Screen sharing/recording/casting in fullscreen apps now works (Xaver Hugl, Plasma 5.24.3).
    • Colors are no longer weird on certain hardware (Xaver Hugl, Plasma 5.24.3).
    • The soft keyboard no longer overlaps the middle of the vertical panel setting (if you are using such a setting) when it appears (Arjen Hiemstra, Plasma 5.24.3).
    • Pressing the Escape key while dragging something now cancels the drag as expected (Marco Martin, Plasma 5.25).
  • Adding tracks to Elisa's playlist when using shuffle mode no longer causes added tracks to have incorrect names (Martin Seher, Elisa 22.04).
  • When using a session, Kate now correctly saves the list of open documents/tabs when the app closes automatically on logout, restart, or shutdown, so that the next time it's opened, it shows what was being worked on last time (Waqar Ahmed, Kate 22.04).
  • Dolphin's context menu is now significantly faster to open when Ark is installed (Kai Uwe Broulik, Ark 22.04).
  • The "Help" buttons in the Info Center are working again (Harald Sitter, Plasma 5.24.3).
  • When displaying the seconds in a digital clock applet, the seconds no longer jump on minute changes (Fushan Wen, Plasma 5.24.3).
  • In the Plasma X11 session, rotating a touch screen no longer causes touches to go to the wrong area of the screen; now everything works as expected (Marco Martin, Plasma 5.25).
  • Dolphin and Gwenview no longer crash when a file or folder is dragged onto their Places panes (Someone with the pseudonym "Snooxx", Frameworks 5.92).

Improvements in the user's interface

  • Compressing files from Dolphin's context menu now produces an archive whose name is based on the names of the archives, not the folder they are in (Méven Car and Nate Graham, Ark 22.04).
  • System monitor bar charts no longer erroneously lack space between bars (John Fano, Plasma 5.24.3).
  • Applet labels in the system tray grid view are now vertically aligned so that the first line in multi-line labels always matches other applets, even those with 1 or 3 lines (Michail Vourlakos, plasma 5.24.3).
  • Text on Breeze-style vertical tabs is now centered vertically on the tabs, instead of being awkwardly aligned to the top (Jan Blackquill, Plasma 5.24.3).
  • Menu items in Breeze-style GTK applications are now exactly the same height as menus in Qt and KDE applications (Jan Blackquill, Plasma 5.25).
  • KRunner and other KRunner-powered searches now allow you to check the spelling of words in any language with dictionaries enabled, not just the main one (Fushan Wen, Plasma 5.25).
  • The quick process view window that can be viewed by pressing Ctrl+Esc now remembers its size and position (in the X11 session, at least), and is initially positioned according to the specified window placement mode (Eugene Popov, Plasma 5.25 ).

When will this all come to KDE?

Plasma 5.24.3 will arrive this Tuesday, March 8, and KDE Frameworks 5.92 will follow four days later, on the 12th. Plasma 5.25 will arrive on June 14th. KDE Gear 22.04 will land with new features on April 21st.

To enjoy all this as soon as possible we have to add the repository backports from KDE or use an operating system with special repositories like Kde neon or any distribution whose development model is Rolling Release, although the latter usually take a little longer than the KDE system
