The new version of Linux Mint 20.2 has already been released

After several a few months of development the launch of the new version of the popular Linux distribution «Linux Mint 20.2»In which development continues with the base of« Ubuntu 20.04 LTS ».

And it is that in this new version that is presented of Linux Mint 20.2 one of its main novelties is that in it new version of Cinnamon 5.0 desktop environment is included, version that was released a few weeks ago and in which the design and work organization introduces a component to track memory consumption.

Besides that also settings are provided to determine the maximum memory consumption allowed by components from the desktop and to set an interval for checking memory status. When this limit is exceeded, Cinnamon background processes restart automatically without losing the session and keeping the application windows open.

In this new version of Linux Mint 20.2, the method to start the screensaver has been redesigned- Instead of constantly working in the background, the screen saver process now starts only when necessary when activating the screen lock. The change made it possible to free up 20 to hundreds of megabytes of RAM. Additionally, the screen saver now opens an additional backup window in a separate process that allows you to block ingress leakage and session hijacking even if the screen saver fails.

In the file manager, Nemo added the ability to search by file content, including the combination of content search with file name search and in dual panel mode, the F6 hotkey is implemented to quickly switch panels.

El update manager also supports automatic installation of updates for spices and packages in Flatpak format, plus has been modernized to force the distribution package to be kept up-to-date. The study showed that only about 30% of users install updates in a timely manner, less than a week after they are published. Additional metrics have been added to distribution to assess the relevance of packages to the system, such as the number of days since the last update was applied.

By default, the update manager will show a reminder if an update is available for more than 15 calendar days or 7 working days in the system. Only kernel and vulnerability updates are counted. After installing the update, the display of notifications is disabled for 30 days, and when the notification is closed, the following warning will be displayed after two days. You can turn off the warning screen in settings or change the criteria for displaying reminders.

Another major change that stands out in Linux Mint 20.2 is that Warpinator has been improved to exchange files between two computers on a local network, as added the ability to select a network interface to determine over which network to provide files, as well as implemented configurations for the transfer of compressed data. A mobile application has been developed that allows exchanging files with devices based on the Android platform.

On the other hand, the continuous improvements to the applications developed as part of the X-Apps initiative, aimed at unifying the software environment in Linux Mint editions based on different desktops, are also mentioned. Xviewer now has the ability to pause a slideshow cwith a space and adds support for the .svgz format, in addition to that in the document viewer, the display of annotations in PDF files is provided below the text and the ability to scroll through the document is added by pressing the space bar, they were added new options for highlighting spaces in text editor and incognito mode has been added to web application manager.

Finally, the improved support for printers and scanners also stands out. The HPLIP package has been updated to version 3.21.2 and the new ipp-usb and sane-airscan packages have been updated and included.

The kernel was not updated, the truth is that I expected more from this version

Well more of the same and more of the same, mostly useless new things, which translates into a distro that is more and more recharged and therefore increasingly slow. You install it and you have a good time uninstalling almost half a distro. Mint is no longer what it was, instead of working more and more speed, performance and more updated kernel, it is the opposite, I reload it more and more and so it seems that I do something. Currently xubuntu gives a thousand turns to Mint.
