The new version of the IceWM 1.5.5 window manager arrives

After nearly two years of development, the release from new version of the lightweight IceWM window manager 1.5.5 which adds new features to the manager and especially the arrival of bug fixes.

For those who are still unaware of IceWM should know that this is a window manager designed for the graphical X Window system, used in Unix systems and derivatives.

About IceWM

It was written from scratch in C ++ and is available under the terms of the GPL license in about 20 languages. It is relatively light in terms of RAM and CPU usage and it comes with themes that mimic the user interfaces of systems like Windows 95, OS / 2, Motif, etc.

The main objective of the IceWM project is to have a window manager with a good appearance and at the same time light.

IceWM can be configured using plain text files which are located in each user's home directory, making it easy to customize and copy settings.

The IceWM window manager optionally includes a task bar, menu, network and CPU meters, email check, and clock.

There is also official support for Gnome 2.x and KDE 3.x 4.x menus through separate packages, multiple desktops (four are available by default), keyboard shortcuts, and event sounds (via IceWM Control Panel).

IceWM light is a version with fewer options, without support for quick launch icons on the taskbar for example, consisting only of a simple text menu and the classic taskbar; which makes IceWM an even faster and lighter manager.

From IceWM features you can see full control through keyboard combinations, the ability to use virtual desktops, the taskbar and application menus.

Built-in applets are available to monitor CPU, memory, and traffic. Separately, various third-party GUIs are being developed for customization, desktop implementations, and menu editors.

Main new features of IceWM 1.5.5

With the release of this new version of the window manager, the implementation of the possibility of changing the configuration through the menu is highlighted.

Another of the new implementations that arrive in this version of IceWM 1.5.5 is improved system tray. Added the ability to customize the order in which the buttons are displayed on the tray.

In addition to that it has been added a graphical display parameter configurator, lor it allows you to change RandR settings, as well as adding a new menu builder to the manager.

On the other hand comes the support for connections to POP and IMAP with TLS encryptionas well as Gmail and Maildir in the tracking applet.

Also highlighted is the new FocusCurrentWorkspace option to select an alternative behavior when setting focus.

The ability to change the focus model without rebooting has been implemented. Added support for changing focus and desktops using mouse wheel.

For themes, the TaskbuttonIconOffset option, which is used in the Outside-ice theme, is implemented, as well as the addition of SVG support.

De the other features that we can find in this new version from the IceWM 1.5.5 window manager we find:

  • Upgraded event sound system
  • Changes made to improve portability
  • Added new hotkeys

    This news has made my day, and in what way. As a theme creator for IceWM I am glad to know that they are still there developing new and better versions. Congratulations to all users of the best window manager! This is what one needs to keep improving more and more, although as a stable Debian user who knows when I will be able to test this version. Still I will be waiting, there is still a lot of IceWM for a while.
