Super Tux

The developers in charge of the project for the popular game “SuperTux” were pleased to announce the release of the new version of SuperTux 0.6.1, which arrives after a year of development. For those unaware of Super Tux, they should know that is a 2D platform video game heavily inspired by Nintendo's Super Mario. It is free software. It was initially developed by Bill Kendrick and is currently maintained by the SuperTux Developer Team.

Instead of Mario, the hero of this game is Tux, the Linux kernel mascot, however, the only reference to Linux. Many graphics in the game were designed by Ingo Ruhnke, creator of Pingus.

The game was originally released for Linux, Windows, ReactOS, Mac OS X. Versions for other computers include FreeBSD, BeOS, among others.

This game is based on the first games in the Mario series, Nintendo and brings Tux to Linux mascot, as the main character.

In addition to Story Mode, there are a large number of community contributed levels available as plugins or in the forums. Anyone can contribute this content using the built-in level editor.

What's new in SuperTux 0.6.1?

In this release of SuperTux 0.6.1 the developers note that they worked hard on the bug fixes and optimizations. Among which stand out the improvements worked on the redesign of the first three bonus cards, the main part of the game includes three new bonus cards.

They also mention that the story mode has been improved, well in story mode, "Ghost Forest" level has been added (Ghost Forest).

How to install SuperTux 0.6.1 on Ubuntu and derivatives?

For those who are interested in being able to install this new version of this popular game, they should know that SuperTux is distributed under builds special for each Linux operating system (AppImage and Flatpak), Windows and macOS.

So in the case of our system that is Ubuntu or some derivative of it, we can download the AppImage file to only give you execution permissions and be able to enjoy this entertaining game.

The AppImage file can be obtained from the official website of the project, although for those who prefer it, they can open a terminal and obtain the file with the following command:

wget https://github.com/SuperTux/supertux/releases/download/v0.6.1/SuperTux_2-v0.6.1.glibc2.14-x86_64.AppImage -O SuperTux.AppImage

Once the download is done, we have to give it execution permissions. We can do this from the terminal by executing the following command in it:

sudo chmod +x SuperTux.AppImage

The graphical alternative to this method is to right-click on the package and not only give Read and Write permissions to the user, but also check the box " Allow to run the file as an executable program”We save it and close it.

Then we double click on the package and the automatic execution of the program will begin.

Y finally They will be able to execute the file by double clicking on the file or from the same terminal with the command:

./SuperTux.AppImage

Now for those who prefer to use Flatpak packages they simply must have support for this type of package added to their system. And the installation of this new version of SuperTux can be done from a terminal by executing the following command in it:

flatpak install flathub org.supertuxproject.SuperTux

Also, as the game is not finished yet, there are still updates to be received, so you can check if there is a new version with the following command: flatpak –user update org.supertuxproject.SuperTux

And voila, you can start enjoying this game.
