Trisquel 8 Flidas, a new version of the freest Ubuntu-based distribution out there

Trisquel 8 Flidas home screen

A few hours ago a distribution based on Ubuntu was released that stands out for two things: that it is the first to be based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (yes, it has not yet come out) and that it is totally free, that is, it meets the requirements of the FSF. This distribution is called Trisquel and the new version is called Trisquel 8 Flidas.

As in previous versions, Trisquel 8 has a nickname called Flidas. This version is based on Ubuntu 18.04, with which Trisquel 8 Flidas will receive support and updates until 2021It has been a long time since Trisquel 7 was launched, so the new version of this distribution incorporates great changes and new features. The first of them is the change of desktop. Trisquel 8 is not convinced of Gnome so now uses MATE 1.12, a lighter desktop than Gnome 3 and it keeps the look of the old Gnome, at least part of it.

The applications used by Trsiquel 8 Flidas have been updated, at least the most important ones and in the case of the web browser, Trisquel has incorporated a new browser called Abrowser, a web browser based on Mozilla Firefox that incorporates several changes so that it is totally free and maintains the privacy and freedom of the user.

Alongside the standard version, the Trisquel team has released two different versions that are based on Trisquel 8. The first one is called Trisquel 8 Mini, a version for resource-poor computers using the LXDE desktop, Midori as a web browser, Abiword as a word processor and Sylpheed as an email manager. The second version is called TOAST Trisquel, an educational version that uses the SUGAR desktop to offer educational applications to its users.

Both the standard version and the rest of the versions can be obtained through this link. If we already have Trisquel as the usual distribution, We just have to go to the update manager and look for the corresponding update. Personally I like Trisquel and its philosophy but it is true that it is very risky to use a base distribution that is still in development. So I would personally recommend waiting a few days to install Trisquel 8 Flidas on production equipment, although we can always take a little risk and install the new version of Trisquel.

If ubuntu 18.04 is LTS. As a rule, even-numbered years and April are LTS in Ubuntu.

I think you are wrong Trisquel 8.0 is based on Ubuntu 16.04 so they are super late. Trisquel 9.0 with Ubuntu 18.04 is expected after more than 6 months.
