How to get Twitch on Ubuntu 17.10

The service and application Twitch is becoming increasingly popular with users more gamers and among users who are not. Video conferences, demonstrations or subsidized talks are some of the functions offered by this new Amazon platform.

Windows users as well as MacOS users have it very easy to use an official native client, but Ubuntu users do not have it so easy. If we want to enjoy Twitch in Ubuntu 17.10 we have two options or alternatives: the first would be to choose the web client, an official client and compatible with all platforms, but this assumes that we have the web browser open; the second option would be choose an unofficial Twitch client.

There are many unofficial clients of this service, but the best or at least the one that best gets along with Ubuntu 17.10 is Gnome Twitch. Gnome Twitch is an unofficial client that integrates with Gnome and allows us to follow our favorite channels from the Gnome desktop and we do not have to load the browser, which in the case of Chrome or Firefox consume large resources.

In the official Ubuntu repositories there is a version of Gnome Twitch but it is not the latest version, so we recommend using an external repository to install and obtain the latest version of Gnome Twitch. On the other hand, you have to note that this program works with Gnome 3.20That is, if we have Ubuntu Gnome with a lower version, it either does not work or it will ask us for a desktop update. So, to do this, we open a terminal and type the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-twitch

This will install the official client that we can use on the Gnome desktop. But it may not convince us or we prefer to use the web browser. In this case we can remove the application with the following command:

sudo apt-get remove gnome-twitch
<span data-mce-type="bookmark" style="display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;" class="mce_SELRES_start"></span>sudo apt-get autoremove

As you can see, even Ubuntu 17.10 users can access Twitch, now it only remains to search and enjoy their videos.
