We previously pointed out how to add MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) support in Dolphin —The default KDE file manager— by adding the corresponding KIO-slave. Today it's time to do the same with Nautilus and any other file manager that makes use of GVFS.
MTP support in GVFS
To install the version of GVFS with support for MTP we will make use of the repository kindly prepared by the guys at Web Upd8. The PPA works both in Ubuntu 12.10 as in Ubuntu 12.04.
So, the first thing is to add the repository:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gvfs-libmtp
Once this is done, you have to refresh the local information and apply the updates:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
Updates can also be applied from the update manager from Ubuntu.
When we have applied the updates we will have to restart our computer; Once we are back in our session, it will be enough to connect our MTP device (anyone that uses version 4.0 and higher of Android, for example) to appear in our file manager (like Nautilus or Thunar).
