Last Tuesday we advanced it to you- Like its younger sisters, Ubuntu 14.04 has also received the update that fixes the serious security flaw detected in the APT package manager and Canonical has already released Ubuntu 14.04.6. It is an update that was not planned, but we remember that we are talking about an LTS version that will still enjoy official support until April 30 of this year. Otherwise it would have been exposed as Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 15.10 and so on until v16.04, v18.04 and Ubuntu 18.10, the only non-LTS version still supported.

It is now possible to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04.6 from Software Update. On the other hand, Canonical has taken the opportunity to put our disposition the new CD images, which means that it is no longer possible to download a previous version that contains the aforementioned APT bug that affected many versions and all their official flavors, which we remember are Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Kylin and Ubuntu MATE. Being a bug in the APT package manager, I haven't read anything about it, but it is logical to think that versions like Linux Mint or elementary OS have to correct this bug.

New Ubuntu 14.04.6 Images Now Available

At this point, it seems like a good time to remember the article we wrote this week on what to do when Ubuntu 14.04 reaches the end of its life cycle. If the APT bug had been detected and corrected after April 30, the most recent supported version would have been Ubuntu 16.04, so it is best to update the operating system to a supported version now. Personally, I recommend moving to Ubuntu 18.04 because we are talking about an LTS version supported until 2023 that has also abandoned Unity, a heavier graphical environment than the GNOME used by the new versions.

Have you already upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04.6 or are you going to jump to a newer version?
