Ubuntu 16.04.2 will arrive next February

Ubuntu 16.04

If you follow the official Ubuntu release schedule, you will surely be waiting for the release of the second major update of the Ubuntu LTS version, that is, the future Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS. However such a thing will not happen this week but will take place next February. This is due to a lag with the latest versions of graphics-related programs.

We are not referring to programs like Gimp or Inkscape but to the Xorg server and Mesa 3D, a program that will be updated to the latest stable version.

The intention of the Ubuntu developers is update the LTS version with the changes inserted in Ubuntu 16.10 and also the latest versions of the programs used by the distribution. In this aspect we have to indicate that the arrival of Linux Kernel 4.8 is expected to version as well as MESA version 12.0.3.

Ubuntu 16.04.2 will incorporate the new features of Ubuntu 16.10

Both will be key for lovers of video games and multimedia file rendering, as it not only increases device support, thanks to the kernel, but also improves their operation with programs such as MESA. The version that Ubuntu 16.04 as well as Ubuntu 16.10 uses MESA is version 11.2.0.

If you want to have these programs we can do it through external repositories. In this post We already tell you how to install the latest version of the Linux kernel. And in external repositories you will find the latest versions of programs such as MESA or secure versions of Java.

In any case, we do not recommend that you do this because Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS is a safe version with the Ubuntu quality seal and the alternative methods could not have the same certificate or create security holes that bring us many problems. In this case you just have to ewait for the next day February 2.

It is an update of improvements in the LTS. They usually get up to a third (up to 16.04.3) for each LTS during the entire support. They usually add considerable improvements in terms of security and major system bugs.

LTS comes out later as I understand but comes more 'strengthened'. . . It asks why after versions 14.04 'I think' it no longer allows the 'google chrome' browser to be installed ???

If it can be installed, just put sudo apt-get install and drag the package .deb a to the terminal

Thank you very much Allam. . . by 'terminal' then !!!

I would like someone to tell me why every time I try to get into the world of Linux, everything goes wrong. I've been trying Ubuntu for a few years, and the only thing I've gotten is "unexpected internal crashes", Driver errors, crashes when installing packages, etc. For God's sake, someone tell me why this is happening. The other day I went to install Cinnamon 3.0 on Ubuntu, and it almost killed the system. It is copying the commands and hala, everything to shit. So we are millions of people who do not understand why this happens. Isn't it supposed to be better than Windows? In mint it happens to me less, but in the end it gets screwed. Honestly, I no longer know where to get the secure packages, because entering commands in the Dash is a guarantee of death, except when I do it from multinational companies, such as Google or Spotify

I am very sorry about your experience, I would not know what to say to you like this, in general, without seeing any log. Ubuntu is characterized by having a more than wide base of drivers to be able to respond to almost any need. My experience is the opposite. I have been using UBUNTU for about twelve years - a date that I calculate from another important event - more or less. As an end-user desktop system, it is unmatched. As a production system for a computer scientist, it behaves as expected from all Linux, that is, very well.

      Receive a greeting.

Hello Sergio! Sometimes different Linux systems behave strangely on one computer versus another. But it also happens with windows, do not despair. It happens to me with Windows 10, sometimes it crashes, it does not turn off ... things like that. I know that in Linux sometimes this type of thing is very desperate, but the "problem", to call it somehow, is that there are many distributions to choose from to solve this.

Look, I'm going to tell you a few to test if you have time. Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based (Linux Mint, Elementary OS). Those of Ubuntu and Mint choose the desktop, they tend to weigh less XFCE, Mate and surprisingly Plasma. On the other hand OpenSuse on my computer was always strange to me, but you can try it, and finally Fedora, which has always been perfect for me and the one I use to develop because its packages are more updated without being the latest.

I usually use these because Ubuntu, OpenSuse and Fedora are supported by companies (refrain from tuxliban) and they give me more confidence, but Manjaro also usually works well in general, but those based on Arch Linux have always given me failures.

Then, to install software, I recommend the software stores that carry these systems, because I assure you that they go very well because they are optimized and you download them from official repositories. Although it is true that the programs that I have downloaded, which are very few (Eclipse, IntelliJ, PyCharm and Chrome) have never done me wrong.

Like I said, try if you have time. I am with Fedora 25 because more or less they have managed to use a laptop with a hybrid card without having to log out or resort to bumblebee. But the one that works for you, and ignore external comments that tell you use this or that. Look, try, choose the one you like the most and it works for you.

Good luck friend, and here we will continue to help you.

Hello a question, how do I go about updating from 16.04.1 to 16.04.2 without having to format.
    A greeting and thanks

When this version is in the official repositories you just have to type in the terminal: «sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade» and it will update itself.
