How to make Ubuntu 16.04 update automatically

ssh

One of the benefits of Ubuntu (and of any other Gnu / Linux distribution) is the ability to control any aspect of the operating system. This is very useful, but it is true that many users do not want so much customization but rather a safe and stable environment. It is because of that many users use Ubuntu LTS and not the normal version of Ubuntu.

Next we tell you how to modify the Ubuntu options so that the system updates automatically and without having to do anything else. This method can be applied to any version of Ubuntu, Although the ideal is to be used in Ubuntu 16.04, the latest LTS version of Ubuntu and the one with the most support from the Ubuntu team.

To get automatic updates, first we have to go to "Software Update". A window will appear showing the steps to update the operating system. If the system is up-to-date, it will tell us "The equipment's software is up to date." Otherwise, the packages that we have to update will appear. In any case it will appear a button called Settings that we have to press.

In the window that appears, not only it will show us the repositories that Ubuntu takes to update its programs but also the management of private keys and additional drivers. We go to the Updates tab. Leaving a screen equal to the following:

Software and Updates

On this screen we have to mark the option "Daily" in "check for updates automatically"; "When there are security updates", choose the option to "download and install automatically"; "When there are other updates", choose the option "Show immediately". After these options, we press the close button and Ubuntu will enforce the new rules which mean that any security related packages will be installed immediately and what is not important is shown to you to install or not to install.

This will allow us to update the system quickly and automatically, although it can also be changed and let only what is related to security is installed. The choice is always ours.
