Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak already has its first Daily Build; Official launch: October 20

Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak

On April 21, Canonical released Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus and on the same day they announced what would be the name of the next version: Yakkety Yak. But if you thought that Ubuntu developers were going to rest after having released their sixth LTS version, you were wrong: they are already working on the next version and Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak already has the Daily Build available.

Daily Builds are kind of betas, but are released daily. If you have been testing a beta of Ubuntu or any of its official flavors, you will have noticed that there were updates practically every hour. You could say that a Daily Build is an ISO image that includes all those updates, so by installing the most current one we will have the operating system with the latest software they have released.

Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak will arrive on October 20

If we do not usually recommend installing the new versions, although later you have the download link, with these Daily Build we still recommend it less for two reasons: the first is that everything is at a very early stage and the second is that no changes compared to the official version which was released last Thursday. Apparently, they have started testing the new version with one goal in mind: that everything works properly when Unity 8 is released publicly, which will probably be in the next version of Ubuntu.

Logically, more important changes are expected when Yakkety Yak is officially launched, something that will take place on October 20. The downside is that Mark Shuttleworth has not provided details on what these changes will be. As always, we will have to wait at least a few weeks to know what will be new in Ubuntu 16.10, since it would not seem like the best idea in the world to launch a new operating system with the only novelty of a different graphical environment.
