Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla already includes Linux 5.8 as the operating system kernel

Ubuntu 20.10 with Linux 5.8

Shortly after the release of a new version of Ubuntu, Canonical begins to prepare the next one. Thus, on April 27 they launched the first Daily Build of Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla. What they put at our disposal those first days is nothing more than an older version on which they add all the changes and it is not until a couple of months before the official launch that things start to get interesting.

One of the most important steps in developing a new version of Ubuntu is when updating your kernel. And that's exactly what they did a few hours ago. Ubuntu 20.10 has started to use Linux 5.8 as the kernel of the operating system, and that is the version that you are expected to use when the stable version is released. And the jump in quality is expected to be very important, since Linux 5.8 includes many interesting new features and up to 20% of the code has been modified.

Ubuntu 20.10 will arrive on October 22 with a big leap in its kernel

Ubuntu 20.10 has already entered the Feature Freeze, that is, the arrival of new functions has already been frozen. This was one of those that were planned and there will still be some small changes such as some tweaks to the user interface or the wallpaper, which I think is another important step in the development of a new version of Ubuntu, more than nothing by tradition. Later, they will release the Groovy Gorilla betas, which will coexist with the Nightly Builds that are constantly receiving updates.

As for the kernel, Linux 5.8 was launched last August 2 (the most updated version is Linux 5.8.6) with new features such as improved hardware support, improvements in Microsoft's exFAT driver, improved performance in SMB3, fixes for EXT4, or improvements for Btrfs. Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla and all its official flavors will land next October 22.
