Ubuntu 20.10 prepares another improvement for ZFS: TRIM activated by default

ZFS and TRIM on Ubuntu 20.10

Many years ago, in 2013, we wrote an article that explained what is TRIM and how to activate it in Ubuntu. Basically, «is a system application that allows us to maintain the performance of our SSD hard drives as if it were the first day«. On the other hand, among the novelties that Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla will introduce we will have some less new, such as improving support for ZFS. Among these improvements, it has been announced that the TRIM it will be activated by default when we use this file system.

This will be possible thanks to a simple change that they have introduced in Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla Ubiquity installer: change the necessary line with the value "autotrim = on" in the mount option when creating a Zpool during the installation process. This means that the Autotrim will be activated, which will make TRIM do your job automatically to improve or maintain SSD health. Otherwise, you have to use the command zpool trim.

Ubuntu 20.10 Autotrim on ZFS will improve SSD health

Although the theory about the ZFS makes us think that it only offers advantages, the practice tells us otherwise, at least today. This month Has been reported de cases where data has been lost, something that a user already complained about months ago and to which Linus Torvalds recommended directly that it will not use ZFS. These may be the reasons why Canonical is paying so much attention to the file system: it has a lot to offer, such as a server's favorite feature that allows us to create restore points, but also a lot to improve.

Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla will be a normal cycle version supported for 9 months that will be released on October 22 and will enjoy support until July 2021.
