Ubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat says goodbye to games

No games on Ubuntu 24.04

Ubuntu 24.04 says goodbye to the games. In order not to confuse sports lovers, we are not talking about those that will take place from July 26 to August 11 in Paris, but about video games. For so long that I can't say when, the main edition of Ubuntu has included games in its default installation, but this will no longer be the case this April, coinciding with the launch of the Noble Numbat family.

Sometimes I think I have the gift of opportunity, a certain aim. Just a few days ago I decided to play Aisleriot Solitaire (I finished it 💪🏻😂), but the most I had done with the games I had been trying Minesweeper for a long time to see how much it was similar to Windows Minesweeper, which I knew. It's possible that there were a lot of people like me, and the Ubuntu team has decided to let go of the ball.

Ubuntu 24.04 will arrive without games because they are not representative

Ubuntu developers say (by OMG! Ubuntu!) that does not «They represent what Ubuntu and the greater Linux community have to offer gaming.» and they prefer to leave them behind. The games will not be available in either the normal/minimal or full installation, but They will still be there for those who update from a previous version.

In total, not much space is recovered, but it is eliminated bloatware for those who will never play them. In addition to the games themselves, Its dependencies will also be removed.

Ubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat will arrive on April 25 with Linux 6.8 and GNOME 46 as the main new features. For those who want to play, there are many options available, the best known being Steam. If you prefer emulators, almost all, if not all, are for Linux, such as RetroArch with its different cores or loose emulators, front end like ES-DE… It won't be because of options. If what you miss is one or more of these games that came by default, they can always be installed from the Ubuntu Application Center.
