Ubuntu: Activating the login sound

Ubuntu-Logo

Bring back the login sound en Ubuntu 12.10 / 12.04 is a fairly easy task, so those users who don't mind can get it back in three easy steps.

The first thing is to open the module Application preferences at startup. This can be done easily by entering the name of the module in the Dash, or through the control menu.

The next thing is to press the button Add and enter the following data:

  • Name: Login sound
  • Command:
/usr/bin/paplay /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-login.ogg
  • Comment: Play login sound

Finally we accept and save all changes. After this, it is enough to close and reopen our session (we may need to restart the computer) for the login sound to be played.

Note: If the previous command does not work, we can try replacing it with the following:

/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="login sound" --volume=15
