Ubuntu has never had such a good chance as this to beat Windows

windows ubuntu

a few days ago in Ubunlog we were talking about if Ubuntu is better than Windows 10 and we made a comparison between both operating systems. The truth is that Windows 10 has already been in the public for a few weeks, and it is clear that -like it or not- Microsoft has done something right for a change, coming up with a version that is a lot better than the previous ones. This, of course, is a good thing.

What is not so good anymore is that Windows 10 collects large amounts of data about you and your PC, and it seems that many media believe that it is fine and that it is an evolution of the operating system. For me, although I consider that Windows 10 is a good evolution for a change - in addition to something necessary - it is another reason to migrate to Ubuntu or Linux permanently.

Windows 10 is being treated in many blogs and different websites with great benevolence, to call it somehow. Many have said that Windows 10 does collect a lot of data, but that's okay because others are doing it too - and they point the finger at Google and Facebook. Just because others do it doesn't mean it's okay, in no sense. It is interesting to see how, in just a few years, we have lost our apprehension to lose our privacy and above we have the courage to call it evolution.

There are so many things that send information about you from Windows 10 that it would take you a while to stop them all. As we have already said, Microsoft takes a lot of data from you as a user, and not just on your computer. Things like location, usage preferences, and even contacts are 'harvested' and sent if you don't prevent it from happening. Even with everything turned off it is difficult to determine if it does not happen equally.

However, it must be made clear that not bad per se for Microsoft to collect this data. In Redmond they admit that they do, and it seems that they have become a company closer to the users in all aspects. We insist, as with Google and Facebook, they warn that they do this. If the user wants to transfer the data, it is up to him, at the end of the day it becomes legal when you accept the terms and conditions of the system. Apparently the new Windows superecosystem in which there is going to be this huge confluence between devices requires the collection of heaps of usage data to function, and if the user is willing to assign theirs, they cannot be forced not to do so.

Cortana as an example

What you are going to read next is an excerpt from the Microsoft website. It is not an interpretation, it is a verbatim quote. We are not judging, but you have to know that this is what happens. If you want to know more, we recommend that you visit the Cortana FAQ.

When you use Cortana, Microsoft collects and uses the information included in your device's information and location history, contacts, voice input, search history, calendar details, content and communication history of messages and applications, and other device information. In Microsoft Edge, Cortana collects and uses your browsing history.

As it turns out, Stallman is going to be right.

Ubuntu as an example

I only have two problems, and neither of them is with Windows 10 itself. One, as you may have already imagined, is that the media turn this collection of user data into, despite the fact that it is legal, the most natural thing in the world. It's not the most natural thing in the world even if everyone else does. Linux doesn't, and it doesn't need it.

The second problem I have with us, the Linux user community, which on many occasions is not consistent with their criticism. To paraphrase the Joker in The Dark Knight, Microsoft collects tons of usage data and nothing happens, but Ubuntu sends a few search requests to Amazon and everyone loses their minds.

Ubuntu as an alternative

One of the phrases that could be read the most in different Internet forums in the past is that Ubuntu lost a good opportunity to impose itself when Windows 8 was seen as a bluff very expensive. In my opinion Ubuntu has never had it as good as now. Today Linux in general is the best user data protection out there, and it will never collect data about you or your PC. Linux systems in general and Ubuntu in particular they will not need your data to perform more. In fact, most flavors of Ubuntu are doing better than the rest of us.

However: Why aren't these migrations happening right now? This point has been debated on many occasions and the reasons have been made very clear, but we can all reduce it to the lack of triple-A games and proprietary software compatibility with major licenses, such as AutoCAD or Photoshop, in professional environments. And yet there are free or open source alternatives just as capable as proprietary ones. The subject of games is another matter. If only someone would deign to fix that at once… And no, the Steam Machines and Steam OS are not doing it at the moment.

There is a very clear red line right now: Windows is choosing to use its components online more on its internal functionality, while Linux continues to bet on privacy. If to this we add a secure file system in which it is necessary to do an important privilege escalation to be able to violate its security, there is only one possible answer.

The article has wrong points of view, collect data ... for what? Let's take an example, you have a friend and he does not know you, he does not know anything about you, he does not know what your problems or your interests are, what experience does a friendship like this offer? The more he knows about you, the closer he can understand you and help you, this applied to Windows 10, which offers data collection? If I get into a page on the computer a lot, it suggests it to me on my mobile when I start to write it even though I have never entered my mobile, I have the photos synchronized on all devices, with date and place information, Cortana knows everything moment where are you, why? In order to remind you of things you told her that will remind you to get to such a place, Cortana is able to know where you live and work automatically, simplifying the configuration, Windows 10 includes tips for new functions, but they only come out if you do not use them, therefore it has You have to know what you use to tell you which option you don't know how to use, because then the Windows 8 complaints arrive ...
Another interesting point is how people are concerned about privacy, calculate the number of people who use Facebook, WhatsApp, Google and their services including Android, in addition the data collection of Windows 10 in theory is not for data sale, nor There is no one looking at what YOU do, only anonymous data from millions of devices, and if I do not commit any crime I do not see any sense to worry, I see the issue of privacy as a problem if it is used in a political way, to search for people with a certain ideology etc, in order to have people watched and controlled so that political dominance is not lost, and if we put ourselves in the case of using something in a totally safe way, without data being collected, the ideal would be not to use internet for example ... or if it is necessary internet use operating systems created or adapted for these purposes, using encrypted P2P communication or similar things,
Having said all of the above, I do not see a compelling reason for people to change, if you are worried that you know what they do, lock yourself at home without internet or telephone, I have nothing against Ubunto, I see that it exists, that the more people, but for example I like Windows 10, and I already see the ubunto interface and it pulls me back, just for that I would not change, most of the people on this blog will enjoy Ubunto more and that's it, but from A realistic and neutral point of view, Ubunto would need something more to be an alternative, an interface that seduces people who use Windows, advertising and more advertising, support from manufacturers and developers, and that without a large multinational behind in complicated.

You don't even know where you are, it's called ubuntu. Tell me how much does Microsoft pay you?

Shit, you're a good male donkey! You didn't spend any time spelling the name of the OS that "you don't like because of the interface". Please, why do people go in and say so many nonsense?

The note in general seems wrong to me, in that if the only way to "beat" Windows is for people to leave scared by all the data it collects, I don't think the battle can be won. At least not on the familiar desktop, which is the most massive. Perhaps in the office or the company, the systems managers begin to look for an alternative if all that is not permanently disabled. There, perhaps more will begin to talk about the issue of non-privacy in Windows in mass media, such as newspapers and on television.
For now, these news are only reflected in blogs or specialized sites, which are visited by people who already use an alternative or salami like the one posted here above. People are not going to understand anything about this whole issue until they are told about it in the mass media.

And on top of that, you defend it, then you don't complain if no state fines you for your activity on the internet, or they sell information to other companies. You are giving it all away!

The problem lies mainly in the lack of AAA games and professional applications, mainly Adobe and Autodesk, but there are many others.

And no, free software is not yet up to the task and there is a lack of investment of time and money to achieve it. And design ...

Paraphrasing Ballmer, Linux needs designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers, designers….

Here what affects according to the conferences of jacob appelbaum are the "metadata" windows and better said windows 10 has shown that privacy does not exist, it is almost as they say about facebook, they are giving their soul to facebook, now they give it to windows . Apart from so many blogs that say how to deactivate, they only show those that can be found at first glance, but a complete detailed analysis of the entire system would be missing to find files that are "telephoning home", an expression that is already quite common.

Honestly, the thing is not so serious with the data that "collects windows"
Remember Ubuntu ... and the hullabaloo that was mounted when it also sent inf ...
Obviously this year is not going to be the year of Linux, and even less that of Ubuntu, Basically people at the user level have no idea of the information that is obtained from you, look if not Chrome and the boom it has in Linux.
At the user level it can be a good system, but it is in the applications where it fails, today if you want to work safely with text documents, FREE OFFICE, it does not measure up to handling large documents and images, export and recovery It's a matter of luck, as long as this is not solved badly, let's go, I myself decided to change LIBRE OFFICE to WPS WRITER; the export and document management is much more faithful to word than free office, and the spreadsheet you can actually work with it without danger, in the LIBRE OFFICE, the ecatomb ... You have time to retouch .. go ahead .. I don't have it.
Another thing that fails: design and bad translations or what is worse incomplete

What a silly comparison! Different systems, different users, different architecture, different file system! and if they want to reach the end user but that cannot be achieved overnight, as long as there are people having bad concepts between FREE SOFTWARE AND OPENSOURCE

Collecting data allows you to further improve what the user wants, thus making the user experience better for your target audience. Ubuntu does not collect data, therefore it cannot use it to understand why most users do not have the balls to download moves that later it is necessary to compile them, download dependencies and a thousand stories that they literally do not understand.

I currently have Ubuntu and Windows 10, and Ubuntu works better than Windows in general terms, but Windows 10 is doing very well, it is the best Windows I have used, on old machines, and the great success is to enhance games and applications, and usability advantage for people. Just for that, even if it works worse, people want Windows. Professional quality Games and Apps, which people can hack or use without paying large amounts. Yes, in Linux there are free and high-quality applications and some Professional applications, but they are not the ones that people want, it's that easy. People want Windows for games and applications. People do not know what free software is, nor do they want to know it. To program Gnu / Linux it can be great, if not better Applications are made and the ones that exist are ported, it is because someone or something prevents it. On the other hand, I have great satisfaction after putting Ubuntu to my liking, I have been able to change it as I wanted and I love it, but I love Windows 10 as it comes. Finally it has some icons, at the height, the decoration of the windows I love and the task bar and start menu is great, without hardly touching anything. Once again Yoyo, you put your finger on the wound.

Beating Windows is still, for now, a fantasy, I think that the most Linux or GNU / Linux could aspire (for purists) is to obtain a market share of around 7% like Apple.
    1. There is not a multinational with billions of dollars behind pushing the bandwagon, except Google with Android (but that's another story)

    2. In terms of usability and design, Windows far surpasses Linux. Perhaps by making Linux an object of desire, as MACs are, you would attract more public, that's the reason for Elementary's (relative) success, but there is still a long way to go. And even if some get angry, Ubuntu is still ugly, isn't it true that after installing it, most of them change the theme to their desktop? LibreOffice uglier still, although in version 5 progress has been made, hopefully it evolves quickly.

    3. The average user does not want to learn, does not want to leave their comfort zone and they prefer not to migrate.

    4. There is an ecosystem of software companies that subsists around Windows (antivirus, system utilities, games, etc, etc)

There are a multitude of reasons that can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppM9tU7-b6A
