Ubuntu is everywhere, this infographic proves

How many people use Ubuntu? Is it very widespread? By all studies, Ubuntu is used less than Mac and far less than Windows, but what happens when other factors are taken into account? Well, we realize that very famous companies like Netflix, Snapchat, Dropbox, Uber, Tesla or even the ISS (international space station) have something in common: they all use a version of the operating system that Canonical released in 2004 (Ubuntu 4.10 was the first version of all).

As all the readers of this blog should already know, the next day 21 it will be launched publicly Ubuntu LTS 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) and dustin kirkland has contributed to create the infographic that you can see after the cut. The infographic has been made to celebrate the release of the next version of Ubuntu, a version that should be the first of the long-awaited convergence (although it seems that it will not arrive in time to use Unity 8).

Ubuntu is everywhere

The problem with being able to do a reliable count is that anyone can download and install Ubuntu without having to register each of its installations. If, for example, a user has three computers and an Ubuntu ISO is downloaded, Canonical can only know that the image has been downloaded once, when that image has been used on three computers. If that user happens to install Ubuntu to 10 colleagues, the same download would be used on 13 computers. How can you make a actual count? It is impossible.

But Ubuntu is present in millions of computers, public clouds, tested clouds, drones, IOT devices (the Internet of things) and is increasingly present in more mobile devices. We can only say two things: one is the first sentence of the infographic, that "Ubuntu is everywhere." The other thing we can say is that Ubuntu is used more than we think from what can be counted. Will your market share increase from April 21?
