Everything has an end. And that final has arrived in Ubuntu Studio 16.04 LTS, the version of the Ubuntu multimedia flavor that was released in April 2016. The Xenial Xerus family has a 5-year support, but Ubuntu Studio does not, which is why, since yesterday, it will no longer receive any more updates, even in the of security patches, nor of functions nor of new versions of its application package.
The team recommends upgrading to Ubuntu Studio 18.04, and it does so because it assumes that a user who has stayed in an LTS version for three years wants to make the leap to another LTS version. This version will still be supported until 2021, for which they also recommend adding their Backports repository. This type of repositories includes software such as themes, icons, wallpapers, menus, etc. If the repository is not installed, what you will have is the version released in April 2018 that will be updated only with important packages.
Ubuntu Studio 18.04 will be supported until 2021
To install the Backports repository for the multimedia version of Ubuntu, open a terminal and type these commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntustudio-ppa/backports sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade
To update from v16.04 LTS to v18.04 LTS you have to go to Software and Updates and under "Updates" have the option "Only LTS releases" checked. Once we have verified that we have this option marked, in a terminal we will write the following command:
sudo do-release-upgrade
Another option is to upgrade to Disco Dingo, but keep in mind that the version released 8 days ago will only be supported for 9 months. The non-LTS versions are for users like a server who like to always have the latest features and whose important data (including some configuration folders) is kept on a backup partition. What are you going to do: upgrade to Bionic Beaver or Disco Dingo?
