Ubuntu Touch goes ahead: UBports works on the OTA-10 of the mobile version of Ubuntu

Ubuntu Touch OTA-10

If I remember correctly, it was in 2013 that Mark Shuttleworth told us about convergence and Ubuntu Touch. It sounded great: the same operating system on computers, mobiles and tablets, but four years later they realized that it is not possible, not today. That is why Microsoft has also failed and Apple has not even tried, leaving macOS for computers and iOS and modified versions of its mobile operating system for phones, tablets, watches and smart TVs.

When Ubuntu Touch was taking its first steps, there were some Linux-loving users who bought a phone or tablet that used Canonical's mobile operating system and these users were orphaned after the decision to discontinue the project. But the good thing about the Linux world is that there is a huge community and there is always the possibility that someone will take care of what someone else discards. In the case of Ubuntu Touch, who took over the project was ubports, who is working on the OTA-10 operating system.

Ubuntu Touch's OTA-10 will improve GPS support

For those who do not know, something normal considering that currently less information is published about everything related to "Ubuntu Phone", the versions of the Ubuntu mobile operating system are called thus, "OTA", from Over The Air , and a number behind. The new version is already being developed and UBports posted the news that will arrive with the new version together with their future plans, among what we have:

  • Mir is having problems and for now they plan to "kill applications" that are not working. A new render of Qt and Unity 8 is needed.
  • Improved support for GPS, which also means that they will remove features to improve reliability.
  • Ubuntu Touch is coming to PINE64 / Pine Phone.
  • They are considering relying on another version of Ubuntu, probably Ubuntu 20.04.

This is good news for all Ubuntu Touch phone owners. UBports continues to improve the operating system and, taking into account that mention Ubuntu 20.04It seems that they will continue to do so for a long time.
