Ubuntu Unity 22.10 debuts as an official flavor with Unity 7.6, the first major desktop update in six years

Unity 22.10

Who was going to tell me? I, that when Canonical switched to Unity was when I started doing «distro hopping», I see how I have never had the absolute truth and this is the first of the last remixes in become official flavor. If it has, it is because part of the community is interested. For this reason and because the young Rudra Saraswat has done a great job with Unity and maintaining what is now part of the Ubuntu family. His work is rewarded, and Unity 22.10 it is no longer a “remix”.

During the summer, Saraswat published the first major Unity update in six years. version was Unity 7.6, and that is the desktop that Ubuntu Unity 22.10 uses, codenamed, and like the rest of its brothers, Kinetic Kudu. As for the kernel, it uses Linux 5.19, and below you have the list of the most outstanding new features that have come along with this update.

Highlights of Ubuntu Unity 22.10

  • Supported for 9 months, until July 2023.
  • Linux 5.19.
  • Unity 7.6 with these news:
    • The dash (application launcher) and HUD have been redesigned to give them a modern and elegant look.
    • Support for accent colors has been added to Unity and unity-control-center, and the list of themes in unity-control-center has been updated.
    • Fixed broken app info and ratings in dashboard preview.
    • Information panel in unity-control-center has been updated.
    • The rounded corners of the dash have been improved.
    • Fixed 'Empty Trash' button in dock (now uses Nemo instead of Nautilus).
    • Migrated the entire Unity7 shell source code to GitLab and got it to compile on 22.04.
    • The design is much flatter but keeps the blur of the whole system.
    • Dock menus and tooltips have a more modern look.
    • Low graphics mode works much better now and dash is faster than ever.
    • RAM usage in Unity7 is slightly lower now, while RAM usage has dropped substantially to about 700-800 MBs in Ubuntu Unity 22.04.
    • Fixed independent testing Unity7 launcher (this will help Unity7 contributors).
    • Error checking has been disabled and the build time is much shorter (this will help Unity7 contributors).

Introduces a new toggle from the panel to switch between dark and light theme, and between accent colors. It also replaces all libadwaita applications with MATE alternatives. The ISO is much smaller, at 2,8 GBs. RAM usage has also dropped significantly (around 650MBs at idle).

Unity 22.10 It is now available since official website, as well as in the Ubuntu cdimage. You can also update from the same operating system if you are in Jammy Jellyfish, but personally, considering that it is the first official version and my personal hobbies, I would recommend installing the operating system from scratch. In any case, I would like to congratulate Saraswat and all the users who missed the version of Ubuntu with the Unity desktop. Welcome.

For me, something very good, because it was the desktop that I liked the most of what they had done in Ubuntu.
