Important news that has released Mark Shuttleworth this afternoon: after several years using Unity graphical environment, Ubuntu will return to its origins and will use GNOME graphical environment again, the environment he used until they decided to change it for a more modern interface that left absolutely no one indifferent. But the Canonical CEO hasn't just reported on the upcoming makeover; He has also spoken of the end of a dream.
But, let us start at the beginning. When will we return to GNOME? Well, if there are no surprises, in April 2018, in other words, as of Ubuntu 18.04, the next LTS version of Canonical's operating system. Shuttleworth also says that they have stopped investing time, resources and money in Unity8, as well as the much mentioned convergence that would allow us to use the same operating system on computers, mobiles and all kinds of devices. With this in mind, we can think that Ubuntu 17.04 and Ubuntu 17.10 will be the last systems to use an environment that has never been ripe for distribution.
Ubuntu 18.04 will use GNOME and not Unity
In their briefing note, Shuttleworth acknowledges that they were wrong to think that convergence was the future and have decided to take a step back to focus on desktop, cloud and IoT systems or the Internet of Things. It has been a difficult decision, but they have made it because Shuttleworth and Canonical have understood that it was for the best.
In my opinion, although I am sure many of you will disagree, the return to GNOME is great news for how good it is. When I first tried Unity I thought, "What have they done to Ubuntu?" The non-precious but super-fast and intuitive system I knew became slow and confusing. I have to admit that right now I use the standard version of Ubuntu with Unity 7, but only because Ubuntu MATE decides that it is a good idea to freeze my PC screen from time to time. Due to how little I like Unity, I have tried dozens of Ubuntu-based distributions, but I always end up going back to the standard one because, although it is slower, it is the one that gives me the least problems. Thus, I personally cannot be more impatient for change. And you?
Now it remains to be seen which GNOME they will use in Ubuntu 18.04, if the latest version and the one it uses Ubuntu GNOME (the second image), which seems more likely and logical to me, or GNOME 2 (the header image), which is the one they used in 2010 and uses Ubuntu MATE. It also remains to be seen what happens to Ubuntu GNOME / MATE when a new version is released that uses the same graphical environment. What distribution would you like Ubuntu 18.04 to look like?
It is lighter.
The truth is, GNOME shell is the worst desktop environment, no matter where you look at it.
Use of vertical space is lousy
It does not have the ability to minimize windows by default
Every version there are useless changes that break compatibility
Developers never listen to the community
No matter how many extensions are put on it, it is still a poorly developed and implemented desktop.
It was time
Noooooooo…?
For any Ubuntu user running it from brown (and its fucking Win2 tanker boot drums), Gnome is undoubtedly much better than Unity. Although for tastes the colors.
I have been using it since 8.04 and frankly I adapted to Unity. Knowing how to use it, it becomes simpler and easier than gnome (in my experience, of course)
Finally
Finally
Since I was getting used to it. So the other distribution that already used gnome as a graphical environment will cease to exist? Oh god, so much confusion.
Ubuntu Matte?
Ubuntu GNOME. more confusion, if they use the old version of gnome, would ubuntu mate disappear?
Daniel Tzeltal The mate project develops for many distro, I don't think it will go away.
Finally it was time
They have to do something and I am not limited to the desktop environment.
Ubuntu has become everything it didn't want to be years ago.
It is slow, heavy, its hardware recognition is now even worse than Windows (especially on wifi).
A pity.
Just like you… WELL, BRAVO, CHAPÓ !!!
Well, boy, I don't understand how the different versions of Ubuntu can give you problems, I use xubuntu since 16.04 came out and the day that I have a problem has yet to come, of course, yes, I use lts. Greetings.
I do not understand unity8 I was getting excited and I think it is very intuitive because leaving the project behind and convergence is the canonical future that is happening to you, you have to go ahead and what will happen with Ubuntu phone
Gnome is very ugly! Unity is very good and easy to use. It's a shame, it was evolution but hey, what else do you do
Well, I love Unity. I think the best thing is that there is the possibility of choosing the Dash that each one prefers. On the other hand, as constructive criticism, I would like to mention the lack of rigor when it comes to "Explaining" these types of issues since Ubuntu never stopped using Gnome, it only used its own Dash, in this case Canonical's own, and as for the first image, anyway, talking about returning to "Gnome 2" gives the impression that the one who writes in Ubunlog He has little idea what he's talking about.
If I have to do a bit of futurology I think canonical is going to go back to its origins with Gnome2 (Ubuntu 10.04) which currently uses "mate" which is nothing more than Gnome2 that they changed the name and added some tools to it.
Since the first version that included Unity, many of us switched to Ubuntu Gnome. Today time has proved us right.
I use linuxmint with kde and ubuntu 16.04 with unity. After they change to gnome, I will choose to use linuxmint kde as the only desktop… ..
If you don't have a better solution, then you have to adapt to change.
When everyone is happy with the news, until they realize that it is April Fools
Unity sucks
I use 40% cinnamon mint and 60% matte. And given time using more mate. Now trying manjaro with mate 18.01 .. it has a good taste. It has been difficult for me to leave Debian origins, but it is good ... after 22 years using linux one gets used to not getting used to it
The other rich man realized that Unity doesn't like anyone. 7 years in an adventure that nobody liked: UNITY. Since leaving Gnome it has lost its place as the most widely used Linux distribution. I used Ubuntu from version 5.04 and everything it gained from then until version 11.04 it lost in a couple of years. Now there is Linux Mint which is everything Ubuntu wanted to be and couldn't. Greetings.
I finally hear some good news from Ubuntu? that's why I became a linux mint kde user ...
What a good info 😀
It is the worst news they could give me, there is no alternative to Unity
This sure is an 'April Fool's' joke. It was difficult for him to start, and for us to get used to it, but Unity, now, is going very very well ...
I have not left gnome at any time with ubuntu-gnome hahaha
I think Mark's comment has been misunderstood, he talks about them stopping developing unity8 and continuing to use gnome as the basis for Unity 7, the environment will remain Unity.
Sometimes translations are what they have.
«We will shift our default Ubuntu desktop back to GNOME for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS» ... I see it very clearly ...
Having Unity, with some keys in terminal it can become gnome, there are tutorials where are the keys to reconvert it to gnome, then in terminal, and restart, and in input options, click gnome and that's it.
Well go. I have been an ubuntu user since 10.04 and I had gotten used to Unity, which I know has many detractors, but in my case it was great. I find it comfortable, clean and practical. We will see now.
I'm used to Unity by now, I even liked it and I'm not affected by switching to Gnome.
What makes me really happy is that they have understood that they are not going to enter the mobile world and that they focus their forces on the world of the Cloud and IoT where they can provide us with really excellent solutions.

There are few of us who like unity 🙁

Hello I wanted to ask you a question I need to know how I solve the problem that when I install Ubuntu I have no audio x HDMI I need to know some solution my video card is AMD Radeon ddr5 4 GB 460. Thanks
At last they killed UNITY FOR GOD, well he was already dead
Preferable Gnome 3.24 which is infinitely more beautiful and obviously current than that Unity
It was already taking time to realize his error when using unity due to the loss of users who switched to linuxmint and other distributions with gnome or similar light and functional not all people like such dramatic changes. Good for Ubuntu …….
What a shame, for my unity it was like a glove, I hope someone continues and we can continue using it
Well, I have to say that I use Ubuntu 16.04 with Unity and in my case I have no problem except one related to the network card or another with the graphics driver when I come back from suspension, which is solved by closing the compiz process.
I have not tried Gnome 3 so I am not going to give an opinion from hearsay, but for my Unity it is fully functional and has given me practically no problems. I have also tried KDE Plasma and Linux Mint and they did not give me the same stability.
What swallows resources? If it swallows them, in my case I use 3 simultaneous browsers with 10/20 windows open at the same time, clementine, kodi, megasync, etc. and yes, it swallows 8 GB of RAM, but everything is solved by restarting the browsers that are the ones that more swallow. Also, I have 16 GB, what the hell do I want them for?
We will see that such Gnome 3, what I would appreciate would be that once Nvidia and Realtek deign to take out some decent drivers, with that I would be the happiest person in the world.
I have to say that I am not a fanboy and that I have been in Ubuntu less than 1 years, although I have tried operating systems as weird as BeOS or even some Linux distributions like Mandrake that came with the computer magazines of years ago. I have to say that what I use the computer for, which is basically website creation and others, I am very happy.
So much work, so much dedication, so much insistence on Unity 8 and convergence to go backwards, and come to say later that now the desktop is no longer a priority? Mmmmm let the Canonical one down.
2018 I will be back for Ubuntu !!!
When Unity appeared, initially it cost me to adapt, I did not like it and ended up trying other desktops and distros, in search of the stable Gnome. But something caught my eye about Unity and I ended up using it to this day along with the dream of doing an "apt-get install" on my personal phone one day.
Unity is an excellent unconventional desktop, it is quite intuitive and simple to use.
I am sorry for all who worked and gave their best in this unification
cheer up! that there will always be new projects where you can pour your talent.
Now we will have to make symbiosis with the desktop that best accommodates, I think I'll go for xcfe or maybe the plasma.
In any case we will always have the power of the monochrome console.
