If you are one of the users who ultimately decided on install the KDE desktop in our dear ubuntu 12 04, you will have been able to verify, that in addition to uncontrolled that has been created on our desktop, especially in the list of applications, which is not a comfortable or functional desktop.
In addition to that we have also changed the login screen by a horrible dull gray screen and with very little grace.
In the next tutorial I am going to teach you how to uninstall completely this Linuxero desktop, and leave no trace of it on our ubuntu 12 04.
For uninstall the KDE desktop of our team, we will open a new terminal and type the following line:
- sudo apt-get remove –purge kubuntu-desktop kde-standard language-pack-kde-en
With this line, we will have completely removed the KDE desktop of our operating system, but if we restart the computer, we will be able to check how we continue to install both the splash de KDE such as the login screen or user management.
To uninstall this completely and go back to Ubuntu 12 04's own, in a terminal we will type the following:
- sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
If an error message is reported saying that GDM is not installed, we will install it with this line:
- sudo apt-get install gdm
We will click on Accept and select the option GDM which is the own of ubuntu 12 04.
Now we will take back the plymouth own Ubuntu typing:
- sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth
We will select the Ubuntu logo which in this case is option number 2:
Now we will only have that recover the splash of Ubuntu 12 04, and we will do it from the terminal and typing the following line:
- sudo update-alternatives --config usplash-artwork.so
If it happens to you like me and reports an error or that there are no options to change, we will execute the following from the terminal itself
- sudo apt-get install plymouth-theme
- sudo apt-get install galternatives
With these two lines we will have installed a graphic manager to make it easier to choose the splash, to open it we will only have to go to Applications - system tools - galternatives.
Now we will search "Default.plymouth" and we will select the option "/Lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo/ubuntu-logo.plymouth"
Now we will have our ubuntu 12 04 just as we had it before all this mess of installing the desktop KDE.

Thank you for your contribution, very simple and easy to apply.
I followed the steps given on this page, but the group still appears in gray and the option when logging into ubuntu is the kde option, how can I do to eliminate this option?
Open a terminal and type the following:
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
once downloaded and installed you remove the kubuntu ppa with:
sudo ppa-purge ppa: kubuntu-ppa / backports
after this:
sudo apt-get auto remove
I followed all the steps as is and all the kde software are still preserved, besides that the group is still gray with the KDE login option, the truth is that already has me crazy and I can't find how to solve it ...
I did everything and it doesn't work
nothing worked on 14.04.1 🙁
sudo apt-get remove -f kde4 *
and ready
