Unity 7 is now available in the daily versions of Ubuntu 17.10

Ubuntu 17.10

Ubuntu 17.10 development continues and even though Gnome will be the default desktop, Unity development continues. The Ubuntu developers stated that they would not suddenly abandon Unity 7 development and they will. In the daily version of Ubuntu 17.10 we already have the Unity 7 package available, a package that will install the Unity 7 desktop but will not be by default in the distribution.

Unity 7 has changed its packages, being unity-session the new package that will install the old Ubuntu desktop. But this will not be the only new thing that they have incorporated in the development version.

Gnome Shell will be the default desktop in Ubuntu 17.10, but a fork of Unity will still be in the official repositories. This fork is already available to be tested, we do not know when it will stop having support but we do know that there is less left for Unity 7 to be a desktop that can be installed on Debian, OpenSUSE, Arch Linux or any other distribution that is not based on Ubuntu.

The Ubuntu team has incorporated theme support for snap apps, in such a way that when we install a package in snap format, the program will use the Ubuntu artwork to better incorporate itself into the operating system.

The distribution kernel will finally be kernel 4.13, but for the moment the developments will continue to be based on kernel 4.10, which is in Ubuntu 17.04. But the most interesting thing about the latest Ubuntu news is the intention of creating a graphical interface for its livepatch service. And it is interesting for the simple reason that Canonical wants to incorporate its services to all users, not only to server users but also to users of the Desktop version.

Possibly in a few months, Canonical surprise us with a single installation imageIt may be, but it seems that that is something that is a bit far. In any case, the next version, Ubuntu 17.10 will have many changes, but it will also reconcile many users. But Will Ubuntu 18.04 do the same?
