How to upgrade to Ubuntu 17.04 from previous versions

Last Thursday we all received Ubuntu 17.04, the latest stable version of Ubuntu, a non-LTS version that may not reach all users if we have versions other than Yakkety Yak.

Here we explain what steps to take to update our old Ubuntu version to Ubuntu 17.04. Steps that if not carried out we might not have the latest version of Ubuntu.

Before moving from Ubuntu LTS to Ubuntu 17.04 we have to make some changes

Ubuntu has an update manager that works quite well, but only from one version to another or from LTS version to normal version. Namely, If we have Ubuntu 16.10, surely we will have already received the update message, but if we have other versions like Ubuntu LTS or Ubuntu 15.10, the update system is a little different.

First we have to go to Software and Updates. In this window we have the tab «Updates»And at the bottom choose the option«For any new version«. This option will check for new versions, not just LTS versions. Once it is changed, we press the close button and we go to the terminal.

Now in the terminal we have to write the following:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

This terminal command will search for the latest versions and install it for us. The process will go version after version. That is, if we have Ubuntu 16.04 we will go to Ubuntu 16.10 and then to Ubuntu 17.04. If we have Ubuntu 15.10, we will first move to Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 16.10, and Ubuntu 17.04. So the last command we have to repeat several times.

Version update downloads are big and heavy so we will need a large bandwidth and a lot of time to carry out the process. In any case, the wait will be worth it because we will have the latest version of Ubuntu with its news and changes as well as some of its drawbacks.

Someone has tried? Still having bugs like 16.04 with some video cards or it has been fixed. With the 16.04 I couldn't get a Radeon r6 to work for me because I couldn't use fglrx?

Could you explain the method, I don't know much,

I have 16.04 and I can't get it to work properly,

I try to play dota 2 and it stays in the presentation, the mouse moves but does not do anything else

To me it goes from pm Linux mint. Matter of taste ...

My Ubuntu and Mint did horrendously wrong.
I'm downloading Ubuntu 17:04 because I like to have a bootable pendrive for what might happen.
But I am reluctant to install it as the main system.
Not only was it bad with the graphics, it was bad with the wifi and other hardware.
Possibly the worst experiences I have ever had on LINUX.

Will it work using the file for paging instead of the swap volume?

It works fine for me on a lenovo y510p except for the hibernate option that doesn't work.

Regarding swap file, will the swap volume work or will it be maintained?

I have taken the opportunity to switch from Ubuntu to Ubuntu Gnome with all this latest move. And I was thinking of going back ... Everything is better for me, aesthetically everything is more beautiful, but I don't know why the WiFi causes problems. But now I see that it also gives problems in Ubuntu ... Something as basic as the internet must be taken care that it goes well.

Hello ... I'm a beginner in all this ... I would like to try a clean version of Ubuntu17 but I really don't know which one to choose, I see that there is an AMD version and another that I don't remember well ... but I don't understand specifically which one I should choose ... for intel processors or Doesn't that affect the election at all? I say; before if I remember correctly .. only chose between 32 and 64 bits and then 32 disappeared and well. i lost

amd the 64bit version is called amd64 (and not AMD), so do not confuse the AMD brand with the name of the 64bit file system = amd64

Good afternoon, trying the command from Ubuntu 16.04, it checks the version and if there is a new one. At the end it gives me the information that there is no new version of UBUNTU. Will I have to attach another repository? Greetings

I just upgraded from Chubut 16.04 to 16.10, and it doesn't recognize my keyboard. I see in another forum that it has happened to several people and I cannot find a solution. Does anybody have an idea

    1.    Dante Alighieri said

The keyboard also happened to me and it turns out that it is a problem with xorg that does not recognize the hardware input (in this case keyboard and mouse). Follow the steps here:
      https://askubuntu.com/questions/908918/updated-from-16-04-to-16-10-the-keyboard-and-mouse-no-longer-works-after-gettin
And in case the web address is not recognized at the time of the download when you use apt-get, you have to enter this other command so that the resolv.conf file works as it should:
      sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf
When asked, answer yes to allow dynamic update.

hello, update my ubundu to 17.04 and now I have a problem with the printer, in the printing state of the document it puts me stopped and I cannot print. I go into the configuration of the system in the printer and it seems that everything is fine, I have uninstalled and reinstalled printing software and nothing, has anyone happened the same?
