How to upgrade your Ubuntu 17.10 to Ubuntu 18.04 Beta

Bionic Beaver, the new Ubuntu 18.04 mascot

The next version of Ubuntu LTS will be released on April 26, that is, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. A Long Stand version that offers more stability and a polished Gnome. It is a version that will undoubtedly have a great acceptance among users, but it is not currently recommended to use it since it is in Beta state.

Despite being from Beta, surely many users want to try or upgrade their version from Ubuntu 17.10 to Ubuntu 18.04 Beta. It is a process that we do not recommend, but we are going to explain how to do it. Well, there are virtual machines or experimentation teams that can be used for these tasks.

First we go to Software and Updates and in the configuration tabs, first We change the update tab to any version and then in the Developer option, we mark the option that appears. we close and reload the cache memory of the repositories.

Now we open the terminal and write the following:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

This will update the system and after the update it will possibly ask us to restart the computer. We do. Now, in the terminal we write the following:

sudo update-manager -d

This will execute the update assistant and has to tell us that there is a version called Ubuntu 18.04 available. Obviously we press the update button. This will launch the update wizard that will guide us through the update to Ubuntu 18.04 Beta. During this process it will ask us for permission to update certain packages, remove other packages and change other packages. A simple process that will take a few minutes. When the update is finished, the wizard will ask us to restart the computer, we say yes and after reboot, our team will have Ubuntu 18.04 Beta.

As you can see, it is a simple and relatively fast process, but nothing recommended to do. Ubuntu 18.04 is still in beta phase and although it may seem very stable to us, the bug can always appear that deletes all our information. And you just have to wait a little over a month to have the final version.

    If when updating I can keep Unity instead of Gnome I will, otherwise I change distro

      TO MAINTAIN UNITY:
      sudo apt install unity lightdm

      And you know you log in and choose unity instead of gnome.
      simple, right?
