How to upgrade Ubuntu LTS to Ubuntu 16.04

update Ubuntu 14.04

There are very few hours left for the launch of the new Ubuntu LTS, Ubuntu 16.04, a version that incorporates major changes in the Canonical distribution as well as a major bug fix that will allow us to have one of the most stable Gnu / Linux distributions of the moment. A few days ago we told you how to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 from Ubuntu 15.10 and now we are going to show you how upgrade Ubuntu LTS to Ubuntu 16.04.

Currently we can say that the teams have two versions of Ubuntu LTS. Version 12.04 and version 14.04. The first, that is, Ubuntu 12.04 will not be able to upgrade directly to Ubuntu 16.04. The difference between the two has been such that Ubuntu has opted for leave only the update for Ubuntu 14.04. So if we want to update we must first update to Ubuntu 14.04 and then to Ubuntu 16.04.

Not all versions of Ubuntu LTS can be upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04

Instead Ubuntu does let us go from Ubuntu 14.04 to Ubuntu 16.04, to make this update we just have to go to Software and Updates and modify the parameters so that it can be updated to the latest known stable version. At the moment Ubuntu 16.04 has not yet come out so it will have to be activated when Ubuntu 16.04 comes out. Once activated, we open a terminal and write the following:

sudo update-manager -d

This will begin to update to the new version of Ubuntu LTS, that is, Ubuntu 16.04. The first step we have to do for this update is to press upgrade button, a button that will start the update wizard, a simple wizard that will perform the relevant steps without losing all the information. Still, I always recommend creating a backup as Ubuntu update commands have not always been characterized by a smooth process. Something that has been corrected in recent years.

Good morning, well, look that today I mount it and I put in the password and I accept it, but I get a paragraph in English: See «man
sudo_rootL »for datails. How do I do it there so that it opens me up, thank you Luis

I need to update now if I don't have to wait for the next update to be released

      1.    David naranjo said

You can upgrade to 18.04 LTS and later to 20.04 LTS

  2.   Javier said

But can it also be updated graphically? The system will notify you when you update and it will tell you that there is a new version available, 16.04 and then you just have to accept and the installation will be done by itself.

Do you have unity? Yes no good thanks

    1.    Celis gerson said

Eduardo Guillén Obvious has Unity, it is the default interface of Ubuntu! Now, if you refer to Unity 8 the answer is no, but you can install it if you want and it seems to be stable (not complete as it does not come in this version) but stable.

    2.    Alicia Nicole Lopez said

Well, it is rumored that it will bring unity 8 it looks very cool, hopefully if it brings it ...

    3.    Guide to install the graphical environment you want in Ubuntu 16.04 said

You can install the environment you want gnome-flashback, lxde, xfce ...
Installing gnome-flashback and activating it is the first thing I did as soon as I installed it… and very well.

JVSANCHIS I am wondering how you installed ubuntu 14.04 on your computer, did you use bootable usb or cd because I installed it but shutdown or reboot or logoff does not work for me, the ubuntu points are frozen when I turn it off or restart and it never turns off press the button on the laptop to turn it off give me the steps and if you installed it from a usb with what program did you boot it, thank you

      1.    gusmalav said

if you have frozen spots, then install cairo-dock to solve that problem

By the way to install the Canon PIXMA MP470 I downloaded the drivers. But the scanner that I start from the terminal with scangearmp I would like to have it in the launcher, more at hand we go. Or maybe the new version makes all this easier and is better "understood" with these from Canon.

  8.   Alicia Nicole Lopez said

that's great! I'm already looking forward to tomorrow to download the lts

And what happens to him? What error does it show? What computer is it?
For the next time I remind you that Ubuntu is CD-live so it is more sensible to try it first in live mode without installing and see that everything is fine.

Do you have an AMD card?

Let's wait what this new Ubuntu brings 🙂

    1.    Jose Garcia said

I already solved it, it seems that it was a problem with the graphics, that if I had to update the kernel since I still had the same one I had in 14.04, otherwise I am very happy, it is very fluid 🙂

    Help please

In the update, after restarting, the Ubuntu home screen appears for a few seconds and then the screen remains as in a terminal and it says:

Welcome to emergency mode! After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view
    system logs, »systemctl reboot» to reboot, »systemctl default» or ^ D to
try again to boot into default mode.
    Press Enter for maintenance
    (or press Control-D to continue):

If I give Control + D it returns to the previous orange screen with the Ubuntu clock and background and after a short time it returns with the same previous message

    If I give Enter I get the prompt: root @ computer_name: ~ #

Can someone tell me what I can do?

    Thank you very much

Hello, same error, install an update and it asks me if I want to update to 16, (I was 14) I say yes and the same thing happened to me, could you solve that?

After almost three weeks of trying and retrying I give up. In my town the connections are slow and unstable, besides I don't have Internet in my house so I had to use other people's connections (cafes and the like). When it finally managed to enter the phase where it downloaded more than 3000 packages and began to download them (which lasted several days), it reached a point (before reaching package 3000) where it returned to 0 and downloaded those same packages again that had already been downloaded. Once ... twice ... enough! I managed to download an image on DVD, I installed it on one, but when I tried to get an update from my version 14… it wouldn't let me. I tried several times ... and nothing. I'll stick with my version 14.

    Good,
every time I try to upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 I get this.
I have tested both in graphical environment and in terminal.
I do not know what to do

    Update could not be calculated

A problem occurred while the update was being calculated.

This could have been caused by:
    * Upgrade to a version of Ubuntu not yet released
    * Be running the current version, not yet published, of Ubuntu
    * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, report this error using the command
    "Ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core" in a terminal.

Hello! I was updating to Ubuntu 16 and in the middle of the long time it took to download the packages, the internet cut me off and I threw an error, but the packages already downloaded were going to remain. When the internet came back, everything started again and now it doesn't even appear to update to 16; (how do I do it? to continue the download or to start again?

Good when updating from the desktop in the middle, a little pink window came out with a message about Microsoft's rights at the end it appeared [OK] but neither pressing enter nor any key could accept and continue the update. I don't know what to do because if it rebooted in the middle of the update, it sure won't start anymore.

I have problems with the wifi, it is not the router (I think), but the thing is that the icon shows that the signal is stable, but lies !!! it falls and comes back and connects after 5 min, it is unbearable !!! watching a video loads a part stops and then starts again. Sometimes it is so critical that it does not even recognize the network, it asks for the password, it connects for a minute and then the network does not appear again ... I have to restart the computer so that the network reappears and "refresh" so that it connects ... Someone gives me light please ???
