In the next article we are going to take a look at Video Trimmer. Today, most users at some point have to trim a part of a video. Either because we want to share it with friends and family or to use it at work. Gnu / Linux users can have a good number of applications designed to carry out basic work in video editing, and this comes to add to that list.
In Ubuntu we will have this tool to cut videos, using its flatpak package for installation. The operation of Video Trimmer is very simple and fast. You just need trim a fragment of a video given start and end timestamps. As indicated in their gitlab page, the video is not re-encoded, so the process is quick and does not reduce the quality of the resulting video.
Working with this tool is extremely simple, as it does not offer any configuration options. We just have to open a compatible video file in Video Trimmer (i only tried mp4, mov and webm, but i am sure it supports more formats) and then press the button to play. Then we will be able to select the piece of the video in the timeline using the mouse. In it you can mark the starting point and end point that you want to have in another video file.
We can also write the values that interest us to cover in yellow the part of the video that we want to keep. The video preview is based on GStreamer, therefore GStreamer plugins installed on the system or Flatpak GNOME Platform.
When everything is ready, there is only press the Trim button, in the header bar, to start truncating, trimming and saving the clip in the folder we choose, with the file name we want.
The developer presents a minimal and simple user interface, with a set of functions focused on what the tool has to do. It must be said that after cutting a video, the program does not offer the possibility of starting or opening another project. We will have to close the program and reopen it.
Install Video Trimmer on Ubuntu
Users will be able to install the latest version of Video Trimmer on Gnu / Linux distributions, including Ubuntu and Linux Mint using the Flatpak package. If you don't have their support enabled in your system, you can consult the article that a colleague wrote a while ago on this topic.
From the software option
Si we visit the page at Flatub, we will have the possibility to download the package to our team.
Once the download is finished, we can open the file manager and go to the location of the downloaded application. If we right click on the file, we will be able to select the option in the context menu "Open with install software". This will open the Gnome Software store, which will show us a page where information about the application to be installed on the computer can be consulted.
From a file
If you have downloaded the .flatpakref file on your computer and you want to use the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) you can use the install command as follows:
flatpak install --from ruta-al-archivo.flatpakref
Once the tool is available in our system, we can search for the program launcher:
Uninstall Video Trimmer
If this tool does not convince you, you will be able to uninstall it by opening a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and using the following command to remove it from the computer:
flatpak uninstall org.gnome.gitlab.YaLTeR.VideoTrimmer
Another way to uninstall this program will be open the software option and look for the application there. You just have to click on the button "uninstall”, Like the one you can see in the following screenshot:
In short, this is a very easy-to-use video cropping tool, which in some cases can be useful to have on hand.
Thank you very much for the information, I am going to try it, greetings compadre.
