Visual Studio Code officially hits the Snap Store

Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code was already available as snap package in the Canonical store for almost two years, but now something has changed: Canonical and Microsoft have partnered to make it official. In fact, what had been available so far was a package uploaded by an independent developer. What is now is an official package developed by Microsoft and whose updates will be delivered by the company led by Satya Nadella.

Microsoft software development engineer João Moreno says what many of us already know, that one of the main advantages of Snap packages is that can be upgraded instantly. This is totally true, but many users, including myself, have found that this will depend on the availability of the developers; Firefox does not update as we all would like in its Snap version. He also mentions that the fact that Canonical is behind it ensures his confidence in current development and a long-term future.

The new Visual Studio Code Snap package is developed by Microsoft

Visual Code Studio is a very powerful IDE for developers with top-notch features like built-in Git control, smart code completion, code refactoring, syntax highlighting, debugging support, and snippets. Visual Studio Code was available for Linux in other binary formats. Now its installation, we are talking about the official version of Microsoft, it is much easier because it is available as a snap. The command would be the following:

sudo snap install code --classic

Visual Studio Code in Discover

If you don't like the commands, can also be installed from the software center from any operating system supported by Snap packages. In the previous image we see Visual Studio Code available in Kubuntu's Discover.

From what I have read, Microsoft will release the updates much sooner than other companies. I imagine it has to do with the fact that your VSC is only available (complete) as a Snap package, unlike many other software that is also available in the APT version. In any case, VSC is already available as snap pack officially.
