This time we will take advantage to install the new version of VLC Media Player which is being renewed to its version 3.0 with which after 3 years of testing it reaches its stable version bringing with it a lot of fixes and adding new features.

If still you do not know VLC Media Player let me tell you that you are missing a great media player Well, this is a free and open source multimedia player and framework and it is distributed under the GPL license, VLC has been developed by the VideoLAN project, which is a non-profit organization and which has several such projects under its charge.

VLC Media Player It has many characteristics that make it superior to several that we can find on the net, although what we can highlight is that this player has its own drivers so it is not necessary to add support for different types of multimedia content.

In addition, this player allows us to play videos in various types of formats highlighting the DVD or Bluray formats and also having the ability to support resolutions higher than normal where high definition or even in ultra high definition or 4K.

What's new in VLC 3.0

As I commented to them this player is currently in its version 3.0 with code name Vetinari thereby totally improving performance and adding various compatibilities. Because of this the core of the program was modified in its entirety to include the following enhancements to the player.

The first one is from its RC versions, support for Chromecast was launched, so in this stable version we already have it natively.

Also VLC already supports the video format in HDR, since the only drawback is that at the moment it only supports HDR10 using the Direct3D 11 decoder in Windows 10.

Features implemented in VLC 3.0

VideoLAN too is laying the groundwork for an upcoming version of virtual reality with 3.0 that offers support for 360-degree video and 3D audio. There is also support for video up to 8K and HDR 10.
Player performance is improved thanks to new hardware decoding support.

Among the other improvements that we find in this version 3.0 we find:

  • Web browsing for distant file systems (SMB, FTP, SFTP, NFS ...)
  • HDMI pass-through for HD Audio codecs, such as E-AC3, TrueHD or DTS-HD
  • 12-bit codec and extended color spaces (HDR)
  • Cast to distant renderers, such as Chromecast
  • Support for Ambisonics audio and more than 8 channels of audio
  • Hardware decoding and display on all platforms
  • HEVC hardware decoding in Windows, using DxVA2 and D3D11
  • HEVC hardware decoding with OMX and MediaCodec (Android)
  • MPEG-2, VC1 / WMV3 hardware decoding on Android
  • Major improvements to the MMAL decoder and output for rPI and rPI2
  • Hardware decoding HEVC and H.264 for macOS and iOS based on VideoToolbox
  • Added a new VA-API decoder and rendering for Linux

How to install VLC 3.0 Vetinari on Ubuntu?

Because this version is not yet found in the official Ubuntu repositories, we will support each other with the help of Snap.

To be able to install this new version on our computer it is necessary to uninstall any other previous version, for this we execute the following command.

If you did it using snap:

sudo snap remove vlc

If not, we uninstall it with this command:

sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove vlc

sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove vlc

Y now we proceed to install the new version with the following command:

snap install vlc

We just have to wait for the installation to finish and then proceed to run the application from our application menu and start enjoying the benefits of this new version of VLC. If you want to consult a little more about this player I will leave you a link to its project from its GitHub page.
