Wayland 1.18 arrives with support for Meson and other minor changes

wayland 1.18

The Wayland graphical server protocol released a new version yesterday. Is about wayland 1.18, a release that has arrived 11 months after v1.17 with minor changes. It is not surprising that a "knit" version arrives with few new features, they usually arrive to correct errors, but there are few noteworthy inclusions. We can hope that among the changes there will be improvements that will make the performance better than the Wayland 1.17 that was released almost a year ago ... or so it should be, since the project does not mention it in its release note.

The most outstanding novelty that has arrived with Wayland 1.18 is a support for Meson Similar to Composer Weston and other open source projects. Specifically, the new version comes with only 4 changes that we can read in this link, if we want to see the official statement, or after the cut, if the version translated into Spanish is worth it.

What's new in Wayland 1.18

  • Added support for the Meson build system (automated tools are still supported, but will be removed in a future release).
  • Added API to tag proxy objects to allow applications and toolkits to share the same Wayland connection.
  • Track timers wayland-server in user space to avoid creating too many FDs.
  • Added wl_global_remove, a new feature to mitigate race conditions with globals.

If nothing happens and taking into account how long it took to launch this version, the next launch could take place in about a year. In that time, it is likely that KDE Community have time to present a version of your software that has fully migrated to Wayland, which is one of their goals for the future. In any case, Wayland is available for in many environments and operating systems and, after a long wait, we already have a new version ready for distributions to adopt.
