What is Grub2 and how to modify it

Many of you have surely heard that so and so has a dual-boot computer where you have Ubuntu and Windows, or that it is best to have Ubuntu with Windows and there is a menu that gives you the option to choose. Well, today we will talk about Grub2 which is nothing more than the program that is in charge of managing that menu as well as of distributing the operation of the machine at the beginning of this. Normally all distribution Gnu / Linux install this program, Ubuntu included and allows us to select the operating system we want to choose.

Grub2 is part of the programs called "Boot Chargers”Are installed in the MBR or Master Boot Recorder, the first byte of the hard disk, and allow us to install several operating systems or have different kernels to apply to the system.

The handling and configuration of the Grub2 It is very difficult for newbies, but doing it in the face of a corporation or company gives a very good image. For those who are newbies and want to modify the appearance of the Grub2 I recommend you grub-customizer.

Grub Customizer, a tool to configure Grub2

What is Grub2 and how to modify it

Grub Customizer is a tool that allows us to modify the grub and its menu in the way we want. We can choose from the operating systems or kernel that we want them to appear until we choose the wallpaper or the font that we want the Menu to use.

Grub Customizer It is not in the official Ubuntu repositories, so to install it we will have to open our terminal and write to it

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: danielrichter2007 / grub-customizer

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install grub-customizer

With this, the installation process begins and in a few seconds we will have it installed. We open it from the Ubuntu dashboard and we will find a simple screen with several tabs that bring together the changes according to the type. In the first tab we will make changes to the entries that we want to appear in the Grub2 menu. In the second tab we will make the general changes, such as modules to load, duration time, etc. And in the third tab we will change the graphic aspect, wallpaper, screen resolution at that moment, font, color, size, etc ...

In addition, this tool is used to recover some damage in the MBR or to clean our system of old kernels.

Grub Customizer It is a very intuitive tool and it is in Spanish, but if you are not very sure of what you do better, do not install it, since all its changes are permanent when using administrator permissions and you can mess it up very fat.

Finally remind you that Grub2 appears in Ubuntu, what happens is that Ubuntu marks as "0" the seconds of waiting for the Grub and thus the load becomes faster, if you do not want to delay this load, do not modify the Grub2, but there is always curiosity ...

Isn't it a leism to "modify" it (since there is no other word that works as a direct object)? Shouldn't the title be "What is Grub2 and how to modify it?"

Hello Rafa_el, thank you very much for reading us and for the correction, I have already modified it, sometimes when I do things very quickly I do not realize these errors that I have, thank you very much for the contribution. Greetings.

Excellent image of the Grub2. How did you make Grub show that list of installed OSs with such a beautiful appearance? In my case, I get a crappy list in black and white, with the definitions of the Os that I have installed, but it doesn't have that excellent appearance at all. you show here in the post.
    regards

Hi Martain, thanks for reading. The first thing to tell you that the image does not correspond to my grub but with the program that I comment at the end of the article if everything can be done, except the icons, (I think). try it and tell me. Greetings.

Good morning Joaquín, I already did tests, and indeed many things can be done as you say, but the icons for now I do not get them. Anyway, it looks better than it was before, thanks for the contribution.
