I have to admit that I am not a big fan of WhatsApp. First, because it is owned by a company that is not exactly famous for respecting user privacy, although they have recently begun to encrypt all their end-to-end connections. Later, because it does not have a desktop client as they do have Telegram and practically all the applications of the competition. But not all my contacts think like me. In fact, practically all my contacts use WhatsApp and not another messaging app, so I have to end up using the app now owned by Facebook. But wouldn't it be nice if we could use WhatsApp without relying on the browser? Well this is possible thanks to whatsie.
How to install Whatsie
Taking into account that the official method to use WhatsApp from a desktop computer is from the WhatsApp Web page, I would be surprised to see a native application in Ubuntu's default repositories, although not too much because there are applications in other application stores . That said, you may have imagined that Whatsie cannot be installed with the command sudo apt-get install, or not until using other commands first. To install Whatsie you have to open a Terminal and write the following commands:
gpg --keyserver pool.sks-keyservers.net --recv-keys 1537994D gpg --export --armor 1537994D | sudo apt-key add - echo "deb https://dl.bintray.com/aluxian/deb stable main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install whatsie
Alternative option
As I see that it is giving errors to some users, you can also enter the repository from the browser and download the Whatsie .deb package. Once downloaded, double click on the package and the installation will be prepared. The web is ESTA Authorization.
Chatting with WhatsApp from Whatsie
The first positive point that Whatsie and other desktop applications of this type have is that does not force us to have the browser open, but those are not its only advantages. From the menu App from the top bar we can:
- Launch the application at system startup (with option to see nothing).
- Check and self-correct spelling.
- That Whatsie is always visible (Float on Top).
- Add an icon to the top bar (Tray).
- Open the links in the browser or in Electron (pop-up window).
In addition, Whatsie also allows us to use some themes that it has installed by default. The one you see in the previous screenshot is the «Gray». For everything else, its use is practically the same as what we would do from web.whatsapp.com, but I think it is worth having an application and, while we wait for a version that does not depend on the smartphone (something that I think will never come), I think Whatsie is the best option we can use in Ubuntu. What do you think?
if it were a client for ubuntu phone, it would be super good
there it is and I think they would sell more
Interesting. Thanks for the tip, I'll try it.
It gives me "error in the key server"
Thanks Pablo it's perfect
We have a telegram client for a long time a thousand times better
Very good I installed it and I use it well, the only thing is, I don't know how to listen to the audios
Excuse me, does anyone know if there would be a risk that the whatsapp account is blocked for not using an official client?
Hello Maykol (and all of you who ask more or less the same): everything is possible, but these clients are practically the same as the official one. In other words, they are like a web-app and I THINK that there will be no problem.
A greeting.
I installed it but I have more contacts in telegram than in whatsapp
For using pidgin they blocked my account and I don't have a smartphone ... can I configure it as is the telegram? Will they bitch me for not having the official application? Thank you
I want to launch it and it won't open .. what do I do?
Hi Diego. Have you tried typing whatsie in a terminal?
Pablo friend, I'm trying the installation and at the time of doing the »sudo apt-get update» it loads a while and then it tells me this
«W: Impossible to obtain http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome-remote-desktop/deb/dists/stable/Release Could not find expected entry "main / binary-i386 / Packages" in Release file (wrong entry in sources.list or malformed file)
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or some old ones have been used instead »
Ignoring it I try to install with "sudo apt-get install whatsie" it loads a couple of things and then it tells me
«Setting liberror-perl (0.17-1.1) ...
Setting up git-man (1: 1.9.1-1ubuntu0.3) ...
Setting up git (1: 1.9.1-1ubuntu0.3) ...

W: You may want to run "apt-get update" to correct these problems "
I would appreciate if you could help me find a solution and be able to install, I am using Xubuntu.
Hello Cristian. From what I see, at that point it tries to download from the Chrome repository and I think they stopped offering support. There you could have a mistake. The others are from Whatsie and it may give you an error because it has fallen or something.
Look in the application panel for "Software and Updates." There you have a tab that I think I remember says "Other software." If you disable Chrome, you eliminate the first error. Then also delete the https://dl.bintray.com/aluxian/deb and start over.
Another option is to delete the repository from the same section, enter here https://dl.bintray.com/aluxian/deb/pool/main/w/whatsie/ and find the version that suits you. They are Debian packages (Ubuntu is based on Debian). The most current is 2.0.9, which is below. Choose the 32-bit or 64-bit, double-click it and install it.
A greeting.
Si
Everything is perfect, very grateful, a greeting.
a piece of advice, article and recommendation. It does not work, nor does it open, nor does it work. A disgusting page

Hello, I have a problem and I do not know how to solve it and it is the following
victor @ Laptop-System: ~ $ sudo apt-get install whatsie
Reading package list ... Done
Creating dependency tree
Reading the status information ... Done
E: The whatsie package needs to be reinstalled, but the file for it cannot be found.
Hello Pablo, Thanks for the contribution.
I installed it on Linux Mint 17 and it worked perfectly. But after I installed it in Ubuntu 16 mate, the installation goes perfectly, you run and configure it without problems, but when you restart the computer, when you launch the application it is open but it does not appear on any desktop, nor with alt + tab. and I cannot open it because it is already running, it is as if it opens in some memory plane where I cannot access. Has this happened to someone else?
I installed it in manjaro, and it eats about 500 of ram, I prefer for now to use franz which is a client for many others and consumes half, for telegram the best is its official client, about 48 MB it consumes in ram.
I adhere to the last comment: very nice whatsie but it eats 25% of the memory of my productive and light notebook with elementary. This is not the way it works. Let's give friend Franz a chance 😉
The truth is that I am not being able to use it and try all of the above, I write whatsie in the terminal and cannot find the order. Enter the link of the library to download and can not find it.
Is there something that has been updated and I need to change the commands?
regards
Good day. I have not been able to locate the whatsie package. Is it off line?
I entered all the commands according to the instructions. Finally it does not locate the package.
How can I undo everything I did? libraries or similar were loaded? There is nothing security tampered with?
It is no longer available, deleted the repository, probably due to pressure from whatsapp
