Whisker Menu or how to have a custom menu in Xfce

We talk about modifications in Unity But there are also other highly customizable and configurable desktops that with few programs or applications allow us to change the appearance and improve the usability of our desktop.

We have talked many times about docks that fit into these characteristics but there are several types of applications that can accompany the docks. One of them is Whisker Menu, an application for Xubuntu and Xfce that allows us to transform the Xfce start menu in a menu similar to that of Cinnamon. For the moment Whisker Menu It is only for version 4.8 or earlier, since so far the program gives problems in Ubuntu with Xfce 4.10.

Whisker Menu Installation

Currently this application is not found in the official Ubuntu repositories, however through the console we can fix it, so we open the terminal and write

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gottcode / gcppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin

After this we will have the application ready that will modify our application menu, to have it working we will only have to right click on the panel and choose the option " Add New Items”And in the list that will appear, mark the option Whisker Menu and press the button "Add."This way we will have the new menu working on the desktop.

Once we have this application installed, we will find incredible improvements such as the category of "Favorites"In our Menu, where we can place the favorite applications with a right click and the option"Add to Favorites”, So we will have a choice of fast or more used applications.

Other options included in this application is the ability to readjust the menu to the size we want as well as to modify it completely through its configuration tool or the modification of the application icons, something little considered but that sometimes has us been essential to perform, especially with some applications.

Whisker Menu It is an option to take into account if you want to have a customizable menu, but there are other options such as Alacarte that allow us to modify the menu to our liking. Now the turn is yours, you choose what to do at your desk, but remember that Whisker Menu NOT SUITABLE FOR XFCE 4.10.
