Why do you use Ubuntu?

ubuntu nice logo

Surely many of your acquaintances have asked you «And you, why do you use Ubuntu? What's that?»Many others know that it is Ubuntu but they see you as a« green dog »while others, the geeks tell you that Linux Mint or Debian is better, more secure distributions and with more software than Ubuntu.

Surely if you recognize these questions or similar answers you will know how confused many are or the strange situation that is created with this question, but really Why do you use Ubuntu?

Surely a friend has asked you why do you use Ubuntu? when it has seen your computer

Not a long time ago Stallman talked about how bad and dangerous Ubuntu is, at least more dangerous than other non-Gnu / Linux systems. Many others warn that Ubuntu or Gnu / Linux don't have as much software as Windows or MacOS. So many other answers that speak of «don't use Ubuntu » but it never says why Ubuntu is used. That is why this question.

I personally have to say that Ubuntu seems easy to me, at least it installs and is functional after installation. Which does not happen to me with other Gnu / Linux systems that, although they are more powerful, do need time to make the necessary configurations to be functional. On the other hand, Ubuntu and any other Gnu / Linux system seems more secure than Windows, not because many say it but because things like the administrator password or the repositories seem to me essential utilities for a safe operating system, something that does not happen in Windows. Regarding software, I don't ask for games so my software needs are more than covered.

And now it's your turn Why do you use Ubuntu? Have you tried other distributions besides Ubuntu? What do you think of the new versions of Ubuntu? What do you look for in an operating system?

I use Ububtu because, as has been said in the article, its installation is very easy and it is functional from the first moment. Then, because I think that the company behind Ubuntu has "moved" to achieve agreements and, I believe, offer greater "compatibility" in general. And finally, and despite knowing other flavors and / or distributions, I feel half Ubuntu fanboy.
In addition, I already have many things to change "lightly" from the distro, although when possible I will go on to test the Roling Release of Debian ..
    Greetings.

Well, I use Ubuntu because it is the only one that is installed on any computer without any problem and for all the compatibility and ease of use, I have had other Linux systems that I liked better (like above) but in the long run they gave more headaches and They weren't so friendly at the installation

Well, as a developer, because its compilation speed (as in other GNU / Linux systems) is very fast. On the other hand, as a user of the penguin, because I like it, simply, and as vadetrans said, it gives me confidence that Canonical is behind with the users.

On the other, it is the only one that gives me real support for the laptop and its hybrid graphics cards; that is, it has never given me trouble installing the proprietary NVIDIA driver without XOrg popping and allowing me to choose between Intel and Nvidia. I reiterate, the only one (together with its derivatives, it is understood).

And together with the previous point, I am a gamer, I require my dedicated card and its proprietary drivers. Now let someone pro-nouveau / free software come and tell me that its performance is superior, and I will tell them that, in my experience, it is not true. I respect free software, and to its extent I use it whenever I can, such as Eclipse, OpenJDK, ProjectLibre, LibreOffice ... but in this field, if it doesn't work for me, it won't work for me, and I use my beloved proprietary blobs to exploit my machine.

    Hello,
With my comment, what I do is reaffirm what they have said before.

It is very quick to install and configure; Ubuntu in its progressive versions has been so Canonical has made a notable effort for it, without detracting from the effort of the other distro.

I feel very comfortable, installed and configuring virtual Box to launch CentOS and install and configure Óralcle. Especially virtual machines work very well in Ubuntu.

The compatibility environment that is generated when installing Ubuntu on a laptop makes a less knowledgeable but demanding user feel comfortable, it is the case my family does not even notice the difference. In fact, out of three machines at home, two have Ubuntu.

Finally, I declare myself a fan of Ubuntu; I am aware that in general Linux in any of its flavors is and will always be better; I have used Suse, Debian, CentOS / Redhat, and others more: Ubuntu really suits me better for the simplicity of installation, configuration and compatibility. The security generated by the continuous maintenance by Canonical and the sense of trust that is generated by being used by the few knowledgeable people.

I have installed Debian and mastered it, but it is not worth it, hours of configurations, that the wi-fi must be installed separately, that there are details in the visual and it looks rustic and needs more configurations, than the mtp for the mobile. Ubuntu is all easy and the applications are practically all. Ubuntu is GNU / Linux without dying in the attempt.

I use Ubuntu because it is fast, safe and functional, it suits my basic and not so basic needs, I have been married to Ubuntu since I met it, I have tried many distros that I liked, but none like Ubuntu. Unity seems like a good environment to me, although I use gnome, canonical is doing well with unity, thanks to gnu / linux I found out what it is really to make the operating system a part of you.

Well, I really started using it to browse because my laptop originally came with ubuntu and when I bought it they gave it to me with windows 8, so I installed ubu8ntu but I had a lot of trouble due to the uefi mode of the bios the first time I erased the entire disk After reading on the internet several posts, I managed to find what it was and have windows and ubuntu in dual boot, since then I fell in love with ubuntu and its flavors are easy to use and with everything you need within reach, just use, plus that feeling of doing things by terminal make you feel the control over your computer, I am currently using xubuntu because I liked its simplicity and speed, but in the same way each flavor of ubuntu has its touch and knows how to reach the user according to what he needs.

I use it for two reasons. First because my laptop is very old and W Vista was already very slow. Now with Ubuntu it is much more fluid, it is not that it flies, but quite acceptable, enough to pull with it without having to buy another one in a while. Second, because coming from Windows they told me that this distribution was the one that was going to give me the least problems, and so far a couple of simple problems that I have been able to solve alone by searching the forums. And it was upgraded from Ubuntu 14 to 16 very easily.

I have tried many distros, I started with Ubuntu in dual bot with windows, then I decided to make the leap completely and installed linux mint only on my computer, in those days I threw a bug with the desktop and could not start, I returned to windows, later I tried debian, open suse, mageia, puppy, sparky, bodhi, fedora, manjaro, elementary, zorín, trisquel, lxle, but always, for one thing or the other, I returned to ubuntu. I love it is simple to install both the distro and the software, it is constantly evolving and with continuous improvements, it is practical, light and excellent in hardware detection. Obviously the light thing may not be exactly ubuntu with unity, but anyone who uses lubuntu or xubuntu will know what I mean by light 😉 Of all the desktops I have tried, I prefer matte for me the right combination of beauty, use of resources , and usability, besides being very stable and configurable. so I write to them from my ubuntu mate 16.04. Greetings Ubunteros !!

I installed Ubuntu pro the first time when I had to replace Windows XP on several older computers. I was able to test it before installing it, I saw that everything worked perfectly, it offers me more than enough software for what I need, in addition to giving us the option of using it in different flavors. The truth is that it is very user friendly.

In Ubuntu practically all the software that comes pre-installed and all the configuration menus are completely translated into Spanish.

In Linux Mint, on the contrary, you install the system and configure it, add the languages in Spanish, for what purpose? Menus are not fully translated, for X software you have to download X language pack etc.

Ubuntu automatically detects the installed software and downloads its corresponding language pack. Saving you a lot of work and not wasting your time in bullshit.

To me that they do not sell me the motorcycle that Linux Mint is better than Ubuntu. Ubuntu from the moment you install it works perfectly and you don't have to spend 2 hours configuring it to leave it half decent.

It is true that Unity as a desktop leaves much to be desired, but hey, ubuntu allows installations (net install) that allow the base system to be installed and that the user install the desired desktop, for example (cinnamon).

Does Linux Mint allow installations (net install)? DO NOT.

I have used Linux Mint a long time and have always come back to Ubuntu for various reasons, X software or X hardware compatibility issues.

I use it for several reasons: quick and easy to install. The installation of programs is not complex. Also because I have several computers and a 7-year-old netbook from which I eliminated Windows 7 Starter and it goes much better with Ubuntu. I also use Ubuntu at work and I consider it more solid and stable than Windows 10 (which I also have installed in another partition and some problems have already given me) ... another reason: I have gotten used to Ubuntu and the use of free software throughout your extension. I would also add as a last reason the ease of installation of any printer or scanner. In this I believe that the ease of installation of this type of peripheral in Linux exceeds that of Windows.

I use Ubuntu for its ease of use compared to other distributions. I use Unity because my maxim is simplicity and usability and not customization, which is where I think Unity has its weakest leg. In addition, the debian platform always seemed easier to use. Not everything I use is open source, and I also use nvida with its proprietary drivers, and Ubuntu is more compatible in this sector. I recognize that there may be better distributions but for me it is very functional. I also like Ubuntu calendars with their LTS (for stability) and their short support versions.

The oldest pc I use with the LTS versions to use it on television, and I use Ubuntu with kodi and with a television card configured with mythtv and used with a remote control, which makes it a very powerful media center and a server of tv services. I also have Steam installed and in these times I downloaded the games that I never paid for with Windows, with well-known titles from Tomb Raider to company of heroes, through all kinds of well-known titles, and of course without giving up our open games of all the life. Steam's evolution to include Linux games has been impressive. It becomes a very powerful media center and game console on TV.

In addition, I have installed ips camera server services with which I have my house under surveillance and I can access it at any time to see it. If I add to that that I have opencloud to have my own cloud, that I use caliber as an e-book server, I also use it as a LAMP server, ftp, that I use remote desktop in html5 with guacamole, that I download music to my mobile through clementine, that I schedule the tv recordings and watch them on my mobile through mythtv web services, that I can watch movies from my library on mythtv ... (I can even watch tv remotely on other PCs) ... the usage is more than satisfactory.

For this reason, it is understandable that I always use the LTS version for what I have described, if I want to have no problems with everything working without much investment in configuration changes on my part.

All with exceptional performance, which would have been impossible in Windows (it is the old pc), since it does not flinch even if all the services are being used with force and even playing the most powerful games at the same time or watching movies of more than 20GB, and I never even managed to move the pc, and when I used Windows ... it took up all the resources ... and it crashed ... so I had to choose what to use. I have managed to raise the graphics settings of the games well above what I could with Windows with the same hardware.

All of this (except the cloud with opencloud, which I prefer with simple https access from the internet) I access from outside my house through openvpn, both from android devices and from ubuntu phone (which is green despite what It promises and although I like it more than android it is necessary that they evolve it much more to be competitive), but as the services that I installed are web I have no problem. Using a vpn with openvpn offers very important security despite all the services deployed.

And all this (except kodi and steam of course) I also use it remotely from my other ubuntu pc, in which I already use the productive office tools (congratulate the latest version of libre office) or clients to access the other's services pc, or other desktop programs of a more personal or productivity nature. In this other ubuntu I use non-lts versions for my entertainment and curiosity and in which I can experiment with wine (in case you have to pull excel or others ...), virtual machines (virtualbox) ..., and of course Steam in case of television others are using it ...

I have not had Windows for more than 5 years. I only use it at work, where despite the fact that my Windows PC at work is more powerful than the ones at home, and that it only has the Office suite, with the latest versions of everything, it goes on pedals. I never endured the degradation of Windows in which software ends up dragging the entire OS and ends up blocking everything, and work helps me remember that. It's W7, they say the W10 is doing better, but I have no need to explore it.

I do not want dual starters that only serve to annoy the start and give problems with the sole purpose of using an excel or configuring a specific hardware (like fitbit bracelets ...). I do not want nfts or fat32 disks (only some pendrive to be compatible).

I don't have Windows, nor do I want it. What do I need it for? What can you give me that I don't have now? I had a very old pc with windows 98 but that broke years ago, I kept it only to configure certain hardware for which they ask for Windows. I do not even want to fix it, so I do not use that hardware, and I have not bought hardware that I cannot configure in another way, luckily almost everything can now be configured with an android.

Who said linux is not up to the task?

The amount of software available is another reason .. as of today, I am very comfortable with Ubuntu 16.04.1

I use it temporarily. I screwed up my windows and installed Ubuntu to go pulling. I'm waiting for a friend to give me a pirated copy of the new windows. One such Vista. By the way, I am waiting and in a "transient ubuntu" situation since 2008.
Even though I ended up being a keyboard professional years later, at that time I was just a basic user who just wanted the thing to work and not cause problems. So the reason for using ubuntu is very clear: it works and does not give problems.
