WoeUSB, create a bootable USB with Windows from Ubuntu

About Woe USB

In this article we are going to talk about a tool that will be useful to have on hand to repair some other equipment. Especially if it is notebooks that do not have a CD / DVD reader. Is about WoeUSB. There have been many cases in which I have had to pull an external drive to be able to load an operating system on one of these computers. Personally when I need to make a bootable Windows USB I prefer to do it from my Ubuntu desktop.

WoeUSB you allows to create a bootable USB with Windows from Ubuntu in a very simple way. I want to make it clear, before continuing, that the method presented in this article is just one of the many ways that Ubuntu users have to create a bootable USB.

The way I see it this is perhaps the easiest way to create a bootable USB. The result of creating it with Windows 10, in this particular case, has been a success. The USB booted up perfectly. But I'm not saying this is the only way.

This is one free software and open source tool. WoeUSB will allow you to create a bootable USB of the most modern versions of Windows. Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 are included. The tool supports all languages and all versions of Windows, including pro, home, N, 32-bit.

In order for us to create a bootable USB with Windows from Ubuntu you will need very few things:

  • The WoeUSB application.
  • Ua USB flash drive (4GB minimum).
  • The Windows 10 .iso file or the .iso file of the version you want.

Microsoft will allow us download Windows disk images from their website so if you don't have one, you can go to their website and download it. Keep in mind that you will need a valid Windows license to activate and use the operating system, but you will not need it to create a USB installation.

Download WoeUSB from Github

You will find WoeUSB available for download from their github page. The easiest way to install WoeUSB on Ubuntu It is by downloading one of these installers from the Webup8 PPA (no official PPA is available at the moment):

  • Installer for Ubuntu 17.04 64-bits. Download.
  • Installer for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64-bits. Download.

If you have a 32-bit system like Ubuntu 17.04 (32-bit) or Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (32-bit) you also have the installers available in the following links.

  • Installer for Ubuntu 17.04 32-bits. Download.
  • Installer for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 32-bits. Download.

Run WoeUSB

Once the application is installed, we can start it from the Dash (or any menu that your desktop environment provides you).

Create bootable USB with WoeUSB

The application is very simple to use. First we have to select a valid Windows 10 ISO image (or any operating system) with the file picker. Next we select the correct USB drive in which we want to install it in the "Target device" section.

You may not see your USB device in the "Target Device" section. If this happens make sure the USB device is connected. Then click the "Refresh" button to update the list of connected devices.

When everything is ready to continue you can go ahead by hitting install. But before doing this, do one last check making sure you have selected the correct drive. The installation process will format and erase the contents of the selected USB drive. This means that you will lose all the data stored in it.

Apart from the above, the tool will do the rest. You just have to let it do its job. Once the task is done, you can close the application and eject the USB safely. Now you can use this USB to install Windows 10 or the system you have selected on a different device.

Everything should work normally, but if the application presents you with an error, you can report it or check possible solutions in the github page dedicated to mistakes by WoeUSB.

    ubuntu mate 18.04

Every time I want to make a bootable pendrive and I choose the device to use, it asks me for root credentials and then it tells me that the pendrive is mounted and to unmount it.

I disassemble it and you no longer see it, and when I remove and put the pendrive back in, I start over with that it is mounted and that I disassemble it ...

I don't understand how they use it.

I answer myself: I could solve it!

You have to have the pendrive formatted with FAT32, and then when using WoeUsb, you should choose the Windows ISO image as the source and as the destination it is VERY IMPORTANT to choose NTFS file system and then choose the mounted pendrive (inserted in a USB port) .
And there it does work, format the pendrive and install the Windows ISO image.

      Regards!
