Xfce 4.14pre3 now available, the final version will arrive in two weeks

Xfce 4.14

Historically, Xfce has been one of the lightest graphical environments available on Linux, but lately it has left a lot to be desired in that regard. There are many comments that assure that "Xfce is no longer lightweight" and it may be something to blame that it has not received major changes since 2015, the year in which they released v4.12 of the graphical environment. Hopefully that will change soon, since have released Xfce 4.14pre3.

This is the last pre-release before the official landing of Xfce 4.14. The new version, which will be released In two weeks, it will come with many bug fixes. v4.14pre3 is a preliminary version that they have released as an option, it was not planned, because they wanted to take more time to improve the graphical environment and update some translations. Still, the launch will occur when planned.

What's New in Xfce 4.14

  • Improvements in xfce4-session.
  • Various fixes in xfmw4 related to a composition.
  • Fixed a crash when mounting external drives in Thunar, as well as a bug that caused Thunar to use 100% CPU when the main directory could not be read.
  • Thunar has also received some usability improvements, such as right-clicking and drag-and-drop, additional accelerators in zooming, and keyboard shortcuts for switching between tabs.
  • Corrections in xfce4-panel, most of them related to various plugins.
  • xfce4-power-manager supports xfce4-screensaver.
  • The power manager checks if the panel plugin is present and automatically hides the article from the systray in this case. This is especially interesting on distributions like Fedora that ship with the Xfce billboard and could end up with two systray items.
  • Screen dimming and idle action (for example, suspend to idle) are now inhibited by video playback on players that support it (for example, a YouTube video on Chromium).
