Xubuntu 15.04: step-by-step installation

xubuntu 15.04 desktop

For a few hours it is already available Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Verbet, the new version of Canonical's operating system, which, as always happens, arrives together with the various 'flavors'. In this case, let's see how to install Xubuntu 15.04, the variant that is based on the popular desktop XFCE and that it was for a long time the lightest option among those based on Ubuntu.

First of all we are going to need download the ISO, something that I personally prefer to do from BitTorrent Since that way you avoid overloading the servers, especially on release dates when everyone tries to get hold of the ISO. In this case downloading the file http://torrent.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/vivid/release/desktop/xubuntu-15.04-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent and letting Transmission manage your download.

Once we have obtained the ISO, and assuming that it is in the Downloads folder (located in our personal folder), we save it on a pendrive (which we are going to assume is located in / dev / sdb):

# dd if = ~ / Downloads / xubuntu-15.04-desktop-amd64.iso of = / dev / sdb bs = 4M

xubuntu

We start our team with the pendrive inserted and in a few seconds we will be taken to a screen like the one we see above, very similar to the one that has accompanied Ubuntu Live CD and its different flavors. In it we can choose the language in which we want to display the interface and also two main options: Try Xubuntu and Install Xubuntu, in our case we are going to choose the latter.

We will be warned that it is necessary to have an internet connection and with at least 5,7 GB of free space on the hard disk, and we click on 'Continue'. Then we are asked about him 'Installation Type', where we have the possibility to format the unit to use it all, create our own partition scheme (manually) or use what is already available, with the possibility of formatting some partitions (for example '/' and swap) leaving others like '/ home' untouched.

xubuntu

Once the partitions have been created, on the next screen we are asked 'Where is it located?' and we are offered the possibility of select our country and time zone.

xubuntu

Then it is time to select keyboard layout, as always with the possibility of trying writing in the text box located horizontally along the entire window; we click on 'Continue' and now what we have is the screen where we enter our data: name, team name and username, in addition to the password (which we enter twice).

xubuntu 15.04

We will see that we have an option that says 'Encrypt my personal folder' and this is something I generally recommend since se encrypt the / home folder and thus there is no way to view its content without entering the password; This is particularly useful if our equipment is lost or stolen.

xubuntu

Click on 'Continue' and the installation will begin, where we are shown a progress bar that allows us to know in a fairly approximate way how much remains for its completion, during which time we will see some information regarding this new version. That's all; how we see the installation is really very simple, even more than it was in previous versions since it only takes a few clicks to complete some information. At the end we have before us the beautiful and always agile xfce desk, and we have everything ahead: we can install multimedia codecs, applications of all kinds and begin to create user accounts and configure, and at this point the truth is that instead of repeating information I think it is convenient that you take a look at the posts from my colleagues for the Ubuntu installation y by Kubuntu, where you will find tips that also apply to Xubuntu (since it is apt-get from the command line) to be able to install VLC, Spotify or add the WebUpd8 and Atareao repositories, two reference sites in everything that has to do with free software. Enjoy Xubuntu 15.04!
