Yaru Team works to make Ubuntu icons look better

Applications in Ubuntu 18.10

It seems like a long time ago that we left Unity behind, but in reality it was not even 6 months since Canonical returned to using GNOME for the standard version of their operating system. It is true that we are not talking about the old version that is still available in Ubuntu MATE, but we could say that it has returned to its roots. Much has changed in recent months and that is something that we can notice in some icons of the operating system, but not all. This is what the team is working on. Yaru.

Yaru is the default theme that comes in Ubuntu 18.10 and has a more modern look than the previous version. Modern UIs have left the frills behind and have a flatter image than five years ago and that is what we have been seeing in Ubuntu and other operating systems for a long time. Right now, although it is true that things are improving at times, Ubuntu icons are not uniform and Yaru Team has already promised that soon the icons will be more uniform that nowadays.

Ubuntu icons will be uniform, word from Yury Team

Just like read In OMG Ubuntu !, the new version of Yaru will allow 4 different shapes for your icons:

  • Circle.
  • Square.
  • Vertical rectangle.
  • Horizontal rectangle.

It remains to be seen if what Yaru's team says is fulfilled, since they ensure that icons such as Firefox or Thunderbird will no longer stand out. What does this mean? We will have to see it, but we cannot rule out the possibility that icons with very strange shapes will die. If it is as I imagine, although I can be wrong, icons like the one in VLC would have a square in the background, something like we see in some mobile operating systems.

As to when these new icons will be available no data has been given. Logically we can dream of its arrival with Ubuntu 19.04, which will take place on April 18, but I would not have too many illusions. Let's remember that GNOME had to have reached Ubuntu 18.04 and that it was not until the next version, 6 months later, that we could enjoy the new look of the operating system developed by Canonical. So to wait for new news.

What icon would you like Yaru to redesign for the next version of her theme?
