Canonical plans to make it easier to install video drivers

Canonical Logo

As you know Ubuntu does not natively incorporate the latest version of the drivers from NVIDIA, AMD and Intel and some features and technologies that cannot be inside the system given Ubuntu policies.

Of which it also affects with the incorporation of new technologies such as the VULKAN application and among others.

To add the latest video drivers from these companies, we need to fall back on the PPAs (Personal Package Archive) to enjoy these new technologies.

Of which adding them is not the problem, but that both the system and the hardware of your computer do not conflict with the configuration default for these drivers.

And those who have done it know what I am talking about and mainly I also speak through the Xorg.

Even so, with all the documentation and information that you can find on the net, there are still people who may find some difficulty with such a procedure.

Canonical reveals its plans for Ubuntu 19.04

Recently Jason Gospel (from Forbes), made a question on his Twitter account, wondering why Ubuntu hadn't yet made itself a graphical tool to add the PPAs of the main graphics drivers to make life easier for users.

And that was how one of the heavyweights of Canonical and especially of those who are responsible for Ubuntu, and it was not "just anyone" who responded to Jason's tweet it was Will Cooke, Canonical Director responsible for the desktop development area .

According to Cooke, Canonical has plans for the next development cycle (Ubuntu 19.04 and Ubuntu 19.10) add some GUI (Graphical Interaction Interfaces) to make adding these PPAs easier, or as he said "pointy-clicky".

Jason asked if it would be possible to select the appropriate PPA for his GPU and Cooke's answer was yes, that would facilitate the access to the Betas controllers of the companies.

This type of facility, questioned by Jason and answered by Cooke, shows that Canonical is attentive to the demands of its users.

Canonical wants to gain ground with gamers

With the arrival of Steamplay using the Proton (DXVK + Wine) to Linux and bringing the possibility of being able to play a number of games previously only available on Windows, «forced 'companies that maintain Linux drivers' to move' too, like NVIDIA and AMD, and thus bring the implementations and improvements that VULKAN provides.

As we can remember, last year Canonical has made some moves, among which we can highlight Canonical's call to Nvidia users to carry out some system tests with your private controllers as well as open ones.

Given that even though Canonical has its own benchmarks where they can run the system on different hardware configurations, this can hardly come close against the reality of the wide diversity of system users.

With which a data collection was made on the execution and interaction of the system with these controllers thanks to all those who decided to participate.

With this we can see that Canonical has been preparing to open the field of the system for gamers, given that today the demands of users are much higher.

For now we can only wait to see what the Canonical team has in mind for this year and its system, given that the simple fact of the great functionality of Proton, leaves a great door open to a market that has solidified and characterized in these years.

And also wait until that great Tabu that has been in Linux for many years where "Linux is not for games" is finally extinguished and things change from now on.

Without further ado, we are left to be able to have good fruits throughout this 2019 and that everything is for the benefit of the users and to be able to take advantage of all that potential that we have in our graphs without restrictions.
