Chrome 117 arrives with design improvements, developer tools and more

google chrome web browser

Google Chrome is a closed source web browser developed by Google, although derived from an open source project called "Chromium".

A few days ago, Google announced the launch of the new version of your web browser "Google Chrome 117", which highlights the redesign that adopts Material You design elements, new features, along with a redesigned Chrome web store, among other things.

In Chrome 117 we can find a Updated interface available for testing, which offers a “flat” presentation of panels in the “Google Material 3” style, in which a dynamic color adjustment system has been implemented and the button images have been redrawn. This new view can be enabled through “chrome://flags#chrome-refresh-2023”

For some users, in Chrome 117 new hamburger menu design has been enabled, which now appears with rounded corners, increased padding, and the use of icons in addition to text. The buttons for deleting data on viewed pages, managing the user profile, saving and sharing documents (“Save and Share”) have been moved to the first level of the menu.

Another change that is highlighted, in the display in the address bar of the indicator indicating that the site is accessing an opportunity to which you were previously granted access (for example, indicators are displayed when a web application accesses the microphone and camera or requests location data).

In addition to this, it is also noted that removed secure data transfer flag- Instead of a padlock in the address bar, A neutral “settings” icon is now displayed, that does not evoke associations with security. Connections established without encryption still show the "not secure" indicator. According to Google, some users mistakenly perceive the lock icon as a sign of overall site security and trust, rather than an indicator related to the use of traffic encryption. The icon at the top of the address bar is now presented as a button for quick access to the main settings and permissions parameters of the current site.

On the part of the developer improvements, improvements have been made to the tools for web developers, since has been added to the network inspection panel the ability to replace HTTP response headers or downloaded external resources, which can be replaced with a modified local version.

As well It stands out that new CSS functions have been added to facilitate customization of the animation used when adding or removing elements (entry and exit animations, for example, smooth appearance/fading of blocks), as well as to smoothly animate closable top layer elements, such as dialog boxes and pop-ups:

  • CSS “transition-behavior” property to apply transition animation to discrete properties like “display”.
  • “@starting-style” CSS rule to apply the style when creating an entry animation at the stage before the element opens on the page (in the “display: none” state).
  • The "grid-template-columns" and "grid-template-rows" CSS properties now support the "subgrid" value for layered layout of page elements, significantly improving the flexibility of creating grid-aligned page layouts to provide the ability to define child elements linked to parent cells (by placing a separate grid inside a cell).
  • The "text-wrap" CSS property has been implemented with the value "pretty", which allows you to optimize the delivery quality of multi-line text, not the speed.
  • Added support for the CSS syntax “contain-intrinsic-size:auto none;”, when specified, the last remembered size of the element will be used, but if the size could not be determined, it will revert to the value.
  • Added an experimental mode for displaying tabs (“display: tabbed” CSS property), which includes the use of tabs, which, for example, can be used to organize the editing of multiple documents in a web application.
  • Added static Object.groupBy and Map.groupBy methods to group array elements using the string value returned by the callback function, which is called for each array element, as the grouping key.
