Chrome 119 introduces new release cycle, tab groups, and more

google chrome web browser

Google Chrome is a closed source web browser developed by Google, although derived from an open source project called "Chromium".

Announced the launch of the new stable version of Google Chrome 119 and in which they are presented with new functions, as well as various improvements that improve optimization and the browsing experience.

One of the most important new features of Google Chrome 119 is the possibility of save tab groups to categorize different open tabs with it now the user can now save the group and close the included tabs in it so that they do not consume resources and later. In addition, the possibility of saving and synchronizing these groups of tabs is provided, and these groups can be accessed as if they were favorites folders. The feature is enabled for some users and to force it, the “chrome://flags/#tab-groups-save” setting must be used.

Another of the changes that Chrome 119 presents is the new release cycle, is which is now shortened and the period between the establishment of a new version and the start of beta testing It has been reduced in a week.

Besides that, A lifetime limitation applies to all previously stored Cookies. similar to what has been applied since the release of Chrome 104 for new and updated Cookies. Existing cookies will have their lifespan reduced to 400 days in connection with the release of Chrome 119.

WebSQL API support disabled, in favor of web storage and indexed database APIs. The WebSQL engine is based on the SQLite library code. WebSQL API was not compatible with other browsers, was linked to an external library API and increased the risk of security issues (attackers could use WebSQL to exploit vulnerabilities in SQLite).

Temporarily removed the HTML Sanitizer API, which allows elements of content that affect display and execution to be clipped when generated via the setHTML() method. The API was designed to remove HTML tags that can be used to perform XSS attacks. The reason for the removal is that the specification is incomplete, which has changed significantly since the addition of Sanitizer to Chrome. Once the specification is ready, the API will be returned.

Of the other changes that stand out from this new version:

  • CSS introduces new pseudo-classes » :user-valid » and » :user-invalid » that represent form elements whose values either pass or fail validation. Unlike ":valid" and ":invalid", the new pseudo-classes are only activated after the user interacts with the form element.
  • Setting colors in CSS allows you to define values that are calculated relative to other color parameters.
  • The button to “clear” browsing data has the new name “Delete”. According to Google, the first term confused users, who do not associate the "delete" operation with the deletion of data.
  • URL autocomplete now takes into account any keywords previously used to search for a site, and not just words that match the beginning of the address.
  • The CSS clip-path property, which allows you to limit the visibility of an element to a specific area, now supports the value to set a custom area for cropping. It is also possible to use the xywh() and rect() functions to simplify the definition of rectangular or rounded areas.
