Groovy Gorilla: Ubuntu 20.10 reveals its codename and release date

Groovy gorilla

Personally, I miss the times when the announcements were made in a different way, something more official and that came by surprise. But it seems that that is in the past and now we find out about everything in a less romantic way. Yesterday, Canonical He launched Ubuntu 20.04 and all its official flavors that arrived with the codename Focal Fossa, and today we already know that Ubuntu 20.10 will have the codename of Groovy gorilla.

The one who revealed the name was the same one who revealed the Ubuntu 20.04 mascot, Felicity, and her wallpaper. Has been Martin Wimpress, the Ubuntu MATE project leader and who seems to have stepped up in Canonical, who has begun a template where all we read is "Groovy Gorilla Release Notes: Coming Soon." Taking into account the latest events and that 20.04 began with F his first and last name, we can be 99.99% sure that the gorilla will be the animal that will be the pet in Ubuntu 20.10.

Groovy Gorilla is coming in October 2020

On other occasions, Canonical has made it more difficult for us to know what kind of animal was going to be the protagonist of an upcoming release. So it was, for example, with Fossa and Dingo, a feline and a canine that many of us heard about for the first time after the company's announcement. A gorilla is ... well that, a gorilla as normal as the one we see in any movie or zoo. "Groovy" translated into Spanish is "Wonderful" with the sense of exciting. If you allow me the license, we could say that Ubuntu 20.10 will be "the cool gorilla."

That "cool" or simply "wonderful" gorilla will land in October 2020, more specifically on October 22 if there are no changes, as explained in this roadmap. Taking into account that it is Thursday and that Canonical launches its operating systems just that day, we can assure that Ubuntu 20.10 already has a codename and a scheduled launch date. The functions that it will bring under the arm will be revealed in the coming weeks.
