Linux 6.2-rc2 has been released as the first RC version of 2022 after a slow week

Linux 6.2-rc2

Linus Torvalds He launched yesterday Linux 6.2-rc2. It is the second Release Candidate of the first version that will use real Rust code, and it came after a quiet week, something to be expected considering that it was the last week of 2022 and that it had to end with the end of the year celebrations. Everything was so calm that the Finnish developer even considered not releasing anything, something I don't remember happening before.

But at the end of the week, just as New Year's Eve was approaching, things started to pick up, so he finally did release Linux 6.2-rc2. It has a very small size, partly because people have been less active, and the trend is expected to continue for at least another week. It's looking too far into the future to think if this will all end with the release of an rc8, but it seems that right now it hasn't worked as much as it should have up to this point.

Linux 6.2 will be the kernel for Ubuntu 23.04

So the week started off so slow due to the holidays that I thought I might not have any reason to do an rc2 at all, but by the end of the week I ended up getting a bunch of pull requests, so here we are. It's small, even smaller than usual for an rc2, and honestly, I hope the trend continues for the rc3. A lot of people are still out for another week for a well-deserved winter break, so I suspect things will be pretty quiet.

Anyway, last week we saw mostly some nvme fixes, some i915 drm work, and some kvm fixes (and kvm test fixes). See below for the full shortlog, and if you're not already in a holiday food coma, please give this all a good try.

The timelines indicate that Linux 6.2 will be the version that Ubuntu 23.04 will use when it is released this April. As for the arrival date of the stable version, it will be the 12 February, or the 19th if it has to be delayed a week. Bearing in mind that two months later it will arrive Lunar Lobster, the recommendation would be to wait a few weeks before using that version.
