Linux 6.4-rc1 arrives with initial support for the Apple M2 and more Rust code

Linux 6.4 RC-1

After latest stable version and the week of semi-rest in which the petitions are collected, Linus Torvalds He launched yesterday afternoon Linux 6.4-rc1. For the commits delivered, it seems that 6.4 will be a very interesting version, partly because it will start to support Apple's M2, which will allow Linux to run on apple computers. It is also noted that more Rust code has been implemented.

The Rust infrastructure came along with 6.1, but the actual code didn't arrive until two months later. Now, with Linux 6.4-rc1, the Finnish developer has reintroduced Rust code, and this is expected to be the case from now on. Regarding the status of this rc1, everything seems quite normal, although there were two requests that made Torvalds have to work above them a bit.

Linux 6.4 will arrive at the end of June

Things seem pretty normal – the only thing that was slightly unusual for me personally was that we had two different pull requests that ended with me doing my own little series of updates on top.

So both Jens's ITER_UBUF update, and Dave Hansen's x86 LAM x86 support (actually Kirill, but I see Dave's pull) made me do some additional x86 user access cleanups.

The reason I mention that isn't so much "oh, I have to do some coding again", but that this actually made me switch *finally* to a more modern 'git diff' default algorithm. The default git diff algorithm is very traditional (also known as the 'Myers algorithm'), and while it works fine, there have been several heuristic updates to do by default.

If the usual seven RCs are rolled, 6.4 will arrive at the end of june, on the 25th to be exact. If you require an octave, the launch will take place already in July. Ubuntu users interested in installing it when the time comes will have to do it on their own, either by performing the manual installation or by pulling tools like Mainline.

After a time in which there were doubts and it was thought that it would use 6.1, Ubuntu 23.04 It came with Linux 6.2. Mantic Minotaur will arrive in October, and it will do so with a kernel that will be between 6.5 and 6.6.
