MATE 1.16, the new version of the popular desktop, is now available

MATE 1.16

Every time MATE has more users, there is no doubt about that. And whether we use Ubuntu MATE or Ubuntu with MATE, more and more users know and use MATE. That is why the news of a new version is something so popular and this time it will not be for less because in MATE 1.16 too many errors and bugs are fixed that the desk was accumulating.

But bug fixing is not the only thing that this new version of MATE includes. MATE 1.16 incorporates above all support for GTK3 + libraries, some libraries that look like the future of applications and it is not for less because they offer great performance.

MATE 1.16 has several programs rewritten from scratch with GTK3 +

Thus, in MATE 1.16 there will be applications that have been totally rewritten to use these libraries like MATE Terminal or Atril. These applications will show not only the potential of GTK3 + but also the code cleaning that has been done in many applications for its best performance. This is interesting because it not only improves the performance of the desktop but also makes users who left the desktop due to malfunctions return to it again.

In order to have MATE 1.16 in our Ubuntu or Ubuntu MATE we have to wait for the October release where Ubuntu Yakkety Yak will be the first distribution to include this desktop or we can make use of an external repository. In this case, we will have to open the terminal and type the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf/mate-1.16
sudo apt-get update && upgrade
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment ( sino tenemos instalado MATE)

Although we must warn that such repository is not very stable yet and it may cause a failure in our distribution, especially if we have an older version of MATE.
The truth is that MATE's problems were already a nuisance and possibly this version will drastically reduce them, if so we would be facing a great version, possibly larger than Gnome 3.22 What do you think?
