The second RC of Wine 5.0 is already ready, possibly the dev version if it will arrive before the end of the year

Wine

Boys who are in charge of development of the Wine project want to give us great surprises and is that they have not stopped working despite the dates in which we find ourselves since many developers usually take these days to take a break and recharge their batteries to start another year of activities.

But for Wine developers this is not the case, as some of our readers will recall, in previous days we shared here in the blog the note about the arrival of the first Release Candidate (RC1) of what is the new branch of “Wine 5.0”.

The first RC of Wine 5.0 itself did not come with many new features since I basically know about relevant updates, as the case for Geko, as well as the implementation of working on bug reports to close some of them.

It's important to mention that this new branch 5.0 It is not a branch of a stable version, if it is not the jump of the development branch, so this RC is a previous version of what will make up this new development branch.

In the previous RC 1 article we mentioned that Wine developers planned to have the 5.0 development branch ready before the end of the year or at the latest during the first days of the following year.

But given the circumstances it seems that things are on the right track and everything indicates that this new development branch of Wine will be ready before the end of the year.

If you want to know more about the previous version you can consult the article in this link.

What's new in Wine 5.0 RC 2?

How to install Wine 5.0 RC 2 on Ubuntu and derivatives?

Finally, for those who are interested in installing this RC 2 of Wine 5.0, they can do it as follows:

The first step will be to enable the 32-bit architecture, that even if our system is 64 bits, performing this step saves us many problems that usually occur, for this we write on the terminal:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Now we must import the keys and add them to the system with this command:

wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key
sudo apt-key add Release.key

Done this now we are going to add the following repository to the system, for this we write in the terminal:

sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get --download-only install winehq-devel
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-devel
sudo apt-get --download-only dist-upgrade

Finally we can verify that we already have Wine installed and also what version we have in the system by executing the following command:

wine --version
