Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak will start using kernel 4.6 shortly

Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak

The Ubuntu Kernel Team has published a new installment of its newsletter to inform the Ubuntu community about the latest work done on the kernel packages of the GNU / Linux operating system that gives its name to this blog. At the end of April, Ubuntu developers announced that the development of Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak It was officially open, which means that they started uploading new versions of packages, synchronizing repositories, correcting possible problems and resetting the kernel packages, since everything from Yakkety Yak is currently based on Xenial Xerus.

ISO images of build daily Ubuntu 16.10 have been available for download since last April 21, just after the launch of the latest version of the operating system developed by Canonical. All packages, including the kernel, are based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, but it seems that this will change soon and Ubuntu 16.10 will initially use the kernel 4.6, something that also seems to change when the official launch occurs next October.

Ubuntu 16.10 could arrive with kernel 4.7 or 4.8

When Ubuntu 16.10 is released, which, as you know, will be called Yakkety Yak, its kernel could be different. At the moment, the next two versions, 4.7 and 4.8, are being worked on, one of them with support for several years because it is an LTS version, and the next Ubuntu version is expected to arrive one of the two versions being developed during this time.

In any case, it is too early to know what the next version of Ubuntu will include. If you want to try all the novelties that are included, you can download the build daily by Yakkety Yak from THIS LINK, but I don't think it's recommended for at least two or three months. Right now it is not worth installing a version that is practically the same as the last official version that was released on April 21. Of course, if despite our warnings you decide to try it, do not hesitate to leave your impressions in the comments.
