Well the wait is over the long-awaited new version of Ubuntu is already among us, to be precise the version 17.10 Artful aardvark which has caused quite a lot of controversy in recent months among the community.
And it is not to be expected less because with the decision that was made to radically change the Unity desktop environment for Gnome Shell, it gave much to talk about, but without further ado we can only say it is already available for download.
In this new version we have Gnome Shell 3.26 along with all its features that come with this new version of the Canonical distribution.
And let me tell you that the news of the imminent death of Unity, by the decision by Gnome Shell is not the only attraction, but that we also have someone else among the ranks of this new version.
We talk about Wayland, who comes to completely replace Xorg as a screen manager, something that has still generated several criticisms and discontent. Well, although Xorg has been an essential support for each version of Ubuntu, but this time they decided to change.
On the other hand and not least we say goodbye to lightdm as startup manager I was in session because, as I mentioned, Gnome comes with all its repertoire to this new version of Ubuntu, so on the side of the startup manager it came to replace lightdm with GDM.
What's new in Ubuntu 17.10
And between the other most notable changes are:
- Kernel 4.13
- NetworkManager 1.8.
- The window buttons are placed on the right again and they will be the usual three: minimize, maximize and close.
- Support for applet indicators.
- EXT4 encryption with fscrypt.
- QEMU 2.10
- DPDK 17.05.2
- OpenvSwitch 2.8
- Libvirt 3.6.
Last in this new version we say to god the 32-bit versions, with which they put an end to support for this type of architecture, since the argument they used was that most of today's computers are already 64-bit.
Without further ado I leave you the download link of this new version so that you can try for yourself the new that Canonical is preparing for the next version that will be LTS, you can download from here.
I'm already testing it and it works very smoothly.
It's very good. installation is much faster than previous releases. The operating system runs smooth and fast. There are some little things to adjust. Synaptic does not start.
Yes, it starts, I have it installed
Carlos Nuno Rocha Now if I could get it started.
works with all gnome extensions …… ??

I met Linux when more than 10 years ago the Basque government approved it and until now they work at many levels (education-administration, health etc.) at that time the applications were under development (and until now also since it is alive it grows with one and the time) at this time the applications (programs) are superior to those of windows (microsoft) apel (mac) if very superior professionally spoken ... I already surpass those created and marketed by the national trans system .. yes linux I am grateful to you for having opened my eyes and with my grain of atrena as well as the millions of users that we contribute so that knowledge is available to everyone without costing anyone a euro ... yes linux yes ubuntu knowledge will make us free and for everyone always free for even the poorest can enjoy and grow, ear in growing every day more ,,, yes fuck google, windows, and all microsoft, and everything that costs ... they are sons of bitches, health, housing , food, education ... gr atis for all humanity that is linux… ..humanity… .ok

Ronald Quishpe Campoverde

Simon

Lore solay
I love you!!
And how do I update it? At 17.10?
I already have it installed? the most ... only that the startup takes a long time unlike Windows
Well, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth with Ubuntu, now I am with Debian, and it is much better, no bugs or errors, it is true that it does not have the latest software but in return it is more robust and stable
What did you dislike, could you share it with us?
In itself it ends up being like windows. Because it has the same requirements. For an Acer Aspire 5310 it does not work and does not support the WiFi adapter. I already killed myself asking for support and nobody took me into account.
To date, the experience for me to see is AWFUL. At the moment windows 7 was the best after XP. And the 10 is still in diapers
