Alduin, an rss reader to conquer them all

Alduin

Many claim that web browsing is dead. What many users use rss readers to find out what's new on web pages or browse what they like. They are not lacking in reason, but despite this, the users who use these tools are few.

It may be because users still use the desktop or laptop computer as the main tool to access the Internet and that makes the possibilities to use an rss reader diminish.

Recently a desktop tool has appeared that can be used in Ubuntu and that will allow us all those rss readers in a single program. This tool is called Alduin and It will not only allow us to read rss news but also manage them and even eliminate sources and articles in other tools like Feddly.

Alduin still has a lot to polish but those who try it are delighted despite knowing other alternatives such as liferea who is presented as a great rival for Alduin or vice versa.

Alduin is a program written with web technologies, so it is necessary to have these technologies installed and running on our computer with Ubuntu. Despite this, its resource expenditure is not very high and it can work perfectly with other Ubuntu applications.

Alduin installation on Ubuntu

For its installation, we must first install or have the following technologies:

  • Electron
  • React
  • typescript
  • Less (nodejs)

Once we have installed this, we go to github repository and download the corresponding package. Once downloaded, we unzip it and open the Alduin file. This will start the wizard and the installation of everything you need and you do not have our Ubuntu to open the application later. Once it is open and configured, we only have to add it to the Unity panel or simply to the Startup Applications so that it starts with our Ubuntu.

As well warned on the Github page, still not a definitive version of alduin so there can be problems and radically update from one day to the next. In any case, it is worth a try.
